Dear Parent and/or Guardian,

Bienvenidos y mucho gusto! That is, Welcome! and nice to meet you! in Spanish.

My name is Profesora Basulto and I am lucky enough to have your child in one of my Spanish language
classes this year.

As the 2014-2015 school year commences, I would like you to have my contact information and know that
I hope to begin a working relationship with you to help your child succeed academically, not only in my
Spanish classroom, but to excel in school, and begin working towards their goals and dreams for the future!

I believe that your child has the ability to do well in Spanish class and my hope is that they begin to
understand the value and importance of learning a new language and in turn, share with you some of what
they are learning in Room 309.

In today's world, English is essential, but in the United States, English alone is not enough. To compete
academically, economically and politically, and function successfully in a global society, American
students need to be GLOBALLY COMPETENTand that means being able to communicate and
interact effectively in at least one other language and culture.

Studies show that students who learn another language do better in all other subject areas. As they move
closer to graduation and begin to prepare for college or a job, they will have to create a resume showing
their skills and experience. Being able to include proficiency in Spanish will set your child over the top in
comparison to applicants who only speak English. Please remind your child of this whenever possible,
because the practical applicability of language learning is immense and very important for overall success.

In order to achieve excellence in my classroom, I will need your help. I am setting very high expectations
for each student and trying to understand how your child will learn best. This will take a commitment from
your son/daughter, you, and me. Together, we can track the progress of your child and see how dedication
to achievement prevails.

In my classroom, students will be expected to reflect on past performance, track their progress, take
responsibility for their actions, collaborate extensively with classmates, and to appreciate diversity of
cultures and opinions.

I hope to speak frequently with the parents/guardians of all of my students. Please feel free to reach out to
me at any time with questions and/or concerns. The best way to reach me is via email at
cbasulto@bcps.org or by telephone at 202-525-7834.

To help your child succeed in my class, there are four simple things that you can do:

1. STUDY AT HOMEMake sure that your student studies every night for at least 30 minutes. Your
child will benefit most from the material that we covered in class if he/she reviews and practices
independently. This will also prepare them for quizzes and assessments.

2. COACH CLASSESAsk your child to sign up in advance, get your signature on a Coach Class
permission slip, and come to Coach Classes after school on Thursdays from 2:05 - 3:30pm with any
assignments that they do not understand. If this is not convenient, I am happy to meet with students
at another time. Students who attend my Coach Classes and study sessions tend to have much
higher grades in my class.

3. ENCOURAGE Encourage your student to ask questions in class and come seek out extra help
when they need it. Learning Spanish is difficult and involves taking risks to master the language. I
will remind them of their achievements and praise them for doing wellthey deserve it!

4. SUPPLIESStudents will need the following supplies. Please feel free to contact me if you or
your student cannot get any of these supplies and we will work a system out privately.
A college-ruled spiral notebook
A black or red 3 prong folder
Set of dividers
Writing utensils

To help me serve your student better, I would be very grateful if you could take ten minutes out of your
busy day and complete the parent contact sheet and review the class syllabus. Please have your student
return the attached sheet by the end of the week. I look forward to working with you and your student!

Best Regards,
