Young people accused of committing violent crimes

should be tried as adults.

Con
Rourke Brakeville,
Primary Sources:
Here, in this article, a group of people discuss why juveniles deserve to be
tried as adults. It says that juveniles are capable human being that can
think for themselves. Their conscious decisions make them liable for their
actions.

Here in this article, it discusses how a crime is a crime no matter what age,
its a crime. It doesnt seem fair/ equal if a person commits a crime and gets
a short sentence because he/she is a juvenile. Children, almost, get to use
their age as an excuse.

Secondary Sources:
Here, in this article, it argues how the juvenile court should be abandoned.
This court only encourages children to act poorly, because of the little
punishment.

Here, in this article, it talks about how if a child is held in prison he/she will
learn their lesson. If we begin to apply children to the consequences for
their actions, theyll start to behave and furthermore be better shaped for
their future.

Adult time for adult crime.
Primary Sources:
This article suggests support from a teen that agrees if a juvenile can
commit a crime that an adult also commits, they should be given the same
punishment.

One teen argues and believes that if the teens dont want to be around
adult who have committed severe crimes, than the teen should not commit
the same crime.

Secondary Sources:
The author of this article summarizes that the biggest predictor that a child
will end up in Adult prison, is being detained in a juvenile facility.

This article by the Bureau of Justice Assistance summarizes that people
feel as though the efficiency of Juvenile systems are not as intense or
harsh as the Juveniles need.

Adolescents should be held responsible for their actions.
Adolescents between the ages of 14 and 16 should be held
responsible for their actions, particularly in the case of serious crimes
(e.g. murder). This type of argument tends to be endorsed by a lay
audience, which is generally unaware of the circumstances unique to
adolescent development. Ultimately, proponents of this view contend
that adolescents have reached the developmental stage where they
have acquired the cognitive abilities necessary to understand the
fundamental differences between good and bad.
Youth in the criminal justice system
On any given day, approximately 2700 young people are locked up
in adult state prisons, is Youth in adult prisons are at risk of abuse,
sexual assault, suicide, and death.

Young Peoples offence
in any one year, some 250,000 young people from age 8 18
come into contact with Youth Offending Teams; either because they
have
committed crimes or acts of anti social behaviour; or because local
agencies have identified them to be part of preventative programmes.
