MS Office Workout: Word Processing Explanation/grading sheet
Purpose of this workout: The key purposes of this workout include giving you experience: a) searching, evaluating, and selecting appropriate lesson plans based on your selected course theme; and b) composing, formatting, and publishing specific documents using two different types of word processors. You will produce two 1 to 3 page lesson plans that relates to your course theme. For example, if your course theme focuses on ecology you might go on-line and find two different lesson plans about the study of different aquatic habitats. You would then adapt those lesson plans (make sure you include a proper citation for the work that you are using) to fit your intended audience. Based on the assignments requirements listed below, produce one document within each of the two different word processing programs. (Example: http://tstueve.weebly.com/workout-1.html ) Skills needed to accomplish: Ability to research various on-line lesson plan sources, identify related plans, and adapt a specific plan to your selected course theme. Use of word processing formatting techniques that include font size and type changes, alignment adaptations, use of bulleted lists, borders, shading, etc. Insertion, sizing, and use of tables and graphics/pictures Ability to use, compare, and strategically select various types of word processors based on project requirements Procedure to accomplish this workout: 1. Read Chapter 2 of MSO-010 2. Re-read the Level 1 (pgs. 42-55) and Level 2 (pgs. 55-60). Note all of the different techniques that are discussed within those levels. 3. Visit one or more on-line lesson plan library sources (or find one in the library or Technology Resource Center (3 rd floor of BRNG)). To find on-line sources, use a keyword phrase such as K-12 lesson plans in your Internet search engine (e.g., Google). 4. Review page 50 of the MSO-10 text as an example of how to design your finished lesson plan format. 5. Edit your rough draft to make sure it is concise, easy to read, and conveys a clear procedure. 6. For one of your lesson plans, use Microsoft Word and create a document that includes the following: It should be between 1 and 3 pages (single spaced). It should incorporate a relevant picture or graphic that has been properly proportioned. Divide the document into appropriate sections and adapt headings, fonts, and alignment for those sections as needed. Use tables, borders, columns, and other formatting techniques as is needed and appropriate. NOTE: use your discretion on what formatting you include. Dont overuse formatting (e.g., too many fonts and font sizes) that distracts from the content of the message. You must include a reference (e.g., footnote or reference page) that indicates where you obtained your lesson plan (see example on pg. 50 of the MSO-010text). Spell check and grammar check your lesson plan Submit a copy of this Explanation/grading sheet and your document as determined by your lab instructor. 7. Using a different lesson plan, use Google Docs and create a second document that includes all of the formatting listed in step #6 above. 8. After completing the two documents using the different word processors, write a 1-2 paragraph explanation of what differences you found in the processors and what benefits or limitations you noted for each. (20 points possible) Grading based on: ____ (4 pts.) Content of the lesson plans was clearly and concisely articulated and referenced and both plans were well focused on the selected course theme. ____ (5 pts.) All key elements (e.g., procedures, resources, assessment) of the lesson plans were included and fully explained ____ (2 pts.) An appropriate picture/graphic was incorporated and formatted within each of the documents ____ (5 pts.) Various formatting structures were appropriately included (e.g., tables, alignment, font sizing and style, shading, borders, bullet/number lists, header/footer) within both documents ____ (4 pts.) A clearly written document summarized the comparison between the two different word processors. ____ Total
