Unit Orientation
To give the students motivation to
learn about the topic of Australian Rain
forest unit, the teacher will begin the
unit with an activity that allows
students to be creative in their thinking.
Followed by this a discussion and
concept map will be looked at to
assess students current knowledge on
the topic.


LE 1

Building knowledge of the
field

In the next three lessons students will
participate in a range of sources to build
their knowledge. These include, the focus
text, YouTube clips and the Australian
Government factsheet. Students will
participate in a range of hands on learning
experiences to demonstrate their
understanding of the learned knowledge.

- In lesson two, three and four
students will investigate the focus
text, apply factual text using a
concept map and explore factual
texts associated by the Australian
Government. This knowledge will
build towards the overall
understanding of the following
regions

- The Wet Tropics
- Fraser Island
- The Tasmanian Wilderness

Utilising the non-fiction
focus text

Discover & learn about Australian
forests and woodlands (1st ed.).

This text will be used as a focus point
for the unit and will be read in a
number of lessons to assist facts
associated with all three regions.
Students are also able to use this text
during their research time if they wish
to investigate the book further.

Responding to texts In lesson six students will respond to a
persuasive advertisement and will create
meaningful persuasive texts from this.


In lesson seven students will respond to
their factsheet texts and later on explore
them.

Exploring texts Students will explore different text types in
these lessons to form a persuasive
opinion. With this knowledge students will
begin to work towards their assessment

Examining texts including: Factual texts will be explored.

Persuasive advertisements with implied
meaning to express ideas and examine
the language features and conventions
used.

Components of a letter will be taught than
examined more closely.

Text structure and
organisation

In lesson nine, students will begin to
explore the text structure and organization
a letter. In the following lessons students
will be given examples by the teacher to
again remind students of the structure.

Students will begin developing ideas for all
three regions. These ideas will be
recorded in their booklets and can be
reflected upon throughout the unit to
express and develop an idea for their
chosen region.

Visual and
multimodal features
of texts
Over two lessons, Students will watch
different YouTube advertisements with
implied meaning. A discussion will be
followed to explore the visual and
multimodal features of the advertisement
and the possible text features implied.

Creating texts
utilising print and
multimodal texts
Students will use a readwritethink app to
create a mock letter. This letter will be in
preparation for their final assessment
piece.


After creating their text students will be
given the opportunity to type up their letter
and present it in a suitable format that can
be sent off to the regional council

Throughout the unit multiple discussions
will be used to gain students general
capabilities, concerns and opinions on the

After working towards their letter students
will hand in their final copy. This will be the
summative assessment used for the unit.

equally, meaning all students are
to demonstrate their learning
through a variety of discussions,
comprehension questions etc.
It is important to note that students with
special learning needs will be catered for
as assistance will be made to them
throughout the unit.
