formative period in your lives, and you will find that the decisions and events of your late
teenage years and early adulthood will have a tremendous impact on shaping the person
you become.
I hope that you will find some meaningful ideas in the words that follow. Maybe

guidance. Maybe you can take something from this that will help you in the future.
First Things First
Finishing Off High School
1. A teacher once gave a really good piece of advice about the pring of your enior
year. !nce you go through college, youll truly understand. "hat the teacher said was
this# $The way you finish your senior year is the way that youre going to start your
college career. %inishing off high school is e&tremely important, not because its going to
affect your college acceptance or high school graduation in anyway 'unless you fail
everything(, but because it will set the tone for your freshman year in college.
The people who slack off and coast with )s and *s as seniors are going to be the
same people who barely scrape by or who fail out of college the first semester. The
people who take pride in what they do and finish things off the right way are going to be
the people who do very well in their freshman year.+
"hether you want to believe that or not, it is true. Take a look at your fellow
classmates. I can tell you with near certainty that all of your friends who slacked off big
time as seniors will either fail out of college, come close to failing out, or end up
transferring to another school. All of your friends who continue to work hard throughout
their senior year will most likely end up making the ,onor -oll and *eans .ist as
freshmen.
/ou dont have to bust your tail and make your life miserable, because the spring
of your senior year should be one of the most en0oyable times of your high school career,
but you should take pride in finishing things off the right way. 1ust remember that the
habits you form as seniors are the ones you are going to take with you to start your
college career.

-2A*. In all seriousness, find something that you en0oy reading and 0ust read.
"hether its port Illustrated, a maga3ine, a book, or the newspaper# 0ust find something
to read. The start of college is 0ust like the start of football season. At training camp,
youre going to run and run and run. If you havent stayed in shape over the summer,
then you are going to be hurting for all of pre4season.
"ell, your first week of college is going to go like this# /oull walk into an
2nglish or ,istory class and your teacher will assign a 5674page book to read each week,
along with a paper. *ont be surprised to walk into "orld ,istory and hear the professor
say# $-ead this book '8779 pages( and write an :4;7 page paper, </ =2>T

/ou better do some reading over the summer, otherwise the first month of college
is going to be very difficult. 1ust pick up a book or two to keep your mind active, and
maybe even to learn something. ?eep your mind active this summer. ,ere are a few
good suggestions for interesting books@theyre all about sports, education, and winning

Fitting %n and &aking Friends
1. <e yourself, especially from the beginning. 2very college freshman wants to fit in
and make friends. The way you act and the things you do will dictate the kind of people
you attract. If you are yourself, then you will attract similar people. If you try to be like
other people 0ust to fit in, then the kind of people you will befriend wont really be the
kind of people you want to associate with. And, when you go through tough times, all
those fair4weather friends that you made because you were trying to fit in will fade away.
1ust being yourself and doing what you know to be right will go a long way in
helping you to surround yourself with good people. <e yourself and the right people will
gravitate toward you, and youll naturally avoid the wrong kind of people.
#$ever do a %rong thing to &ake a friend or to keep one'( ) Robert *' Lee
2. ome people may like you for the things you do, but your true friends will be the ones
who like you for who you are.
'. *ont be an&ious about meeting people, and dont worry that you wont make any
friends. A lot of people are nervous about starting out at a new place where they dont
really know anyone. *ont be# everyone is in the same e&act boat. The first month or so
of college is one of the easiest times to make friends because everyone is e&tremely
outgoing and trying to meet as many people as they can, 0ust like you will be.
4. Make an effort to continue to make new friends as time goes on. Most people become
part of a group of friends within the first two months or so. A lot of times though, people
settle into that circle of friends and dont make an attempt to keep meeting new people.
Its easy to get comfortable with a set of friends, but youre going to miss out on a lot of
e&periences and on a lot of what other people have to offer if you close yourself off.
"hen you get back from )hristmas vacation for second semester, make sure you get out
and keep trying to e&pand the amount of good people you know and the amount of
quality friendships you have.
A (ood %dea for The Fall ! "u) *sed "ooks+
<uy used books if you can# they usually are much cheaper, and it will also help
you get through the class a little easier. If you can find books that are underlined and
highlighted, it will make reading it more effective. =ow, you dont want a blank book,
and you dont want one thats too marked up. /ou pretty much want to buy the used
books that look like a smart kid owned them.
Ideally, you want to read the entire book or te&t assignment if you can. <ut, most
of the time in college you end up having to skim through books, because you dont have
enough time to read the whole thing. /ou usually skim through the chapters, looking for
the important topics and information. Those are the parts you read closely.
,aving a book thats already underlined will give you a good idea of whats
important in a chapter. If you have time, read the whole chapter or book. <ut if you
dont, then having a used book that is already underlined or highlighted will help you pull
out the important facts and ideas quicker.
School,ork
1. The fun will always be there. The girlfriendsGboyfriends will always be there. At any
time, youll always be able to hang out with your friends and have a great time, youll
always be able to go out and en0oy yourself. <ut, when you have work that needs to get
done, you dont have the lu&ury of being able to take as long as youd like to do it.
-hen it.s tie to ,ork/ )ou have to take care of 0usiness. /ou can go out and
have fun after youve done what you needed to do. <ut, if you try to put things off and
party all the time, youre going to screw yourself over, big time.
<e responsible and take care of what you need to take care of. )ollege is like
anything in life# when its time to work, its time to work. And then when its time to
rela& and en0oy yourself, its time to rela& and en0oy yourself. Make sure you keep those
in the right order.

2. Have fun/ 0ut 0e res1onsi0le. /ou can have a good time without drinking and
partying every night of the week. /ou can have a good time every once in a while
without drinking at all. And if you dont drink or dont want to drink, you can have a
good time without drinking. *ont think that you have to do what everyone else does in
order to have fun. <e your own person and do what you want to do.
*ont be a prude who never en0oys himself, but also dont overdo it and push
your limits. The people who get the most out of the college e&perience are the ones who
are able to balance their academic and social lives.
'. &anage )our tie/ and 1lan ahead. The best thing you can do is spend H6 on one of
those day4planners, and then actually use it. !r simply use the calendar feature on your
cell phone. ?eep it in your backpack and write down your assignments as you get them
in class.
/oure going to get a semester4long syllabus in most of your classes also, so you
should have most of your coursework, paper due dates, and test schedules written down
on that. "hen you have a light day in terms of homework, take some time and get ahead
by getting a 0ump on a paper, or getting some of the stuff due later in the week out of the
way, especially reading. In college, theres going to be a lot of readingIa lot. If you can
ever get a 0ump on it or get it done ahead of time, do it. *ont let it wait until the last
minute if you can get it done now.
4. 2on.t 1rocrastinate. *ont put things off. If you have a paper due in 6 days, dont
wait until the night before to start it. If its Monday, and your work isnt due until %riday,
you can either put it off until Thursday night and go cra3y trying to do it thenIand if
theres any kind of problem with your computer or your printer or with the paper itself,
then youre going to be in a bindJ and, although youre going to have more free time in
the short4term, youre also going to have that paper hanging over your head for the rest of
the weekIor, you can get started on it early in the week and finish it up on Tuesday.
Then you can have the rest of the week to rela& and not worry about that class or the
paper because the work is already done. Alus, if there ever is a problem, you have plenty
of time to fi& the paper, change things, or get it printed.
*ont put work off for the sake of temporary convenience. *o it and be done
with it, and then youll be able to rela& without anything hanging over your head.
3. (et into a routine. A good way to make sure you get your work done is to set aside a
certain time every night or every other night as a designated homeworkGstudy period.
omething many people do that is very helpful is to make K#874L#77 at night, Monday4
Thursday, a self4imposed study hall. After dinner, get your stuff and go to a study lounge
or library and do work for about two hours. If you have work, then do itJ if you have a
test, then study for itJ if you dont have any work, then try get ahead on the things that are
due later in the week or early the following week, especially on the reading. This way,
you will be done with it early and will be able to en0oy most of your weekend, instead of
trying to cram everything in on unday.
-hich Courses To Take
1. If you have to take a generic core at your school, try to take as many of the core
courses early on as you can. Most colleges usually have about ;74;6 types of classes that
you have to take outside of your ma0or. A lot of people end up leaving them until their
0unior and senior years because they want to take fun electives first. <ig mistake.
If you can get your core courses out of the way during your freshman and
sophomore years, youll have them completely out of the picture and be able to take
whatever classes you want as a 0unior and senior. This is a good strategy for three
reasons# As 0uniors and seniors, youll have priority when signing up for courses, so
youll be able to actually get into a lot of the elective classes that youll want to take,
instead of 0ust having to settle for some crummy class so that you can put off a core
course.
econdly, by your 0unior and senior years youre going to have a much better idea
of what you want to ma0or in, what things interest you, and what you might want to do
for a career. If you still have to take your core courses, then youre going to be stuck
with those classes and with your ma0or classes, and not much else. ,owever, if youve
gotten all your core courses out of the way, then you can take classes that interest you and
that can help you in terms of a future career. If you decide you want to pick up a minor
or a second ma0or, then you have the freedom in your schedule to do it and still graduate
on time.
Thirdly, a lot of times people are not sure what they want to study for a ma0or.
)ores are designed to cover a broad range of sub0ects, and by taking those courses, often
you find out which things interest you and which things dont.
ome people might think they want to study science, and then they take biology
and chemistry as part of the core requirement and reali3e that they really dont like it as
much as they thought. A lot of people will take a required course in a particular sub0ect
area and find out that they are really interested in it. <y taking your cores early, you have
a better chance of figuring out what you are going to want to ma0or in, and what areas
you are going to be looking toward in terms of a future career. /ou give yourself a lot
more leeway if you can take your core courses early on in your college career.
2. Aick up at least one minor, in addition to your ma0or. 'Minors are not hard to fulfill#
they usually consist of M4N classes in a given sub0ect area over the course of four years.(
If you are interested in a sub0ect enough and are able to do it with your schedule, think
about double4ma0oring.
The one piece of advice my father gave me about college was this# $.earn to do
as many things as you can that will help you get a 0ob and support yourself after college.+
The more you know, the more things you can do in the 0ob world. omeone who has a
,istory ma0or and then a bunch of random electives can really only teach history or do
something in that sub0ect. <ut a person who has a ,istory ma0or, and also has a minor or
a second ma0or in Marketing, can do twice as many things, and therefore, has twice as
many options when it comes to finding 0obs.
2ven if you dont pick up a minor, at the very least you should use your electives
to take interesting classes that could potentially help you once you graduate from school.
*ont 0ust blow your electives on the easiest, best4scheduled classes you can get into.
Take courses that you are going to get something worthwhile out of.
Filling #our Tool "o4 ! An Analog) to Hel1 #ou Succeed
"ith everything that you learn, every ma0or and minor you pick up, every
leadership and community service e&perience that you can acquire, you are adding
another tool to your personal $Tool <o&.+ The more tools you can acquire, the more
youll be able to do. The more skills you develop, the more youll be able to offer to a
company or organi3ation when it comes time to find a 0ob.
"ith every tool you acquire, the more attractive an employee you become. "hen
you get out into the working world and are trying to find quality 0obs, the more things
that you have to offer, the more opportunities youll have at your fingertipsJ because, the
more tools you have, the more you have to work with... and to get a 0ob with.
"hether its 0oining a club, volunteering, helping with a fundraiser, working a
part4time 0ob, or doing some type of internship, each tool you are able to put in your Tool
<o& is one more reason why a company can and should hire you.
The more you can do to enhance your knowledge, e&periences, and connections,
the more prepared for the 0ob market youll be, and the more attractive a potential
employee you will be.

1. The whole meaning of life is to achieve your full potentialIin all areas of lifeIbased

ability. Then he went on his 0ourney. The man who had received the five talents went at

gained two more. <ut the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the

The two most important things in a persons life are %aith and ,onor. %aith
doesnt have to be a religious thing, it 0ust has to be some belief that somehow, someway,
you are going to make it through the day. It can be a faith in a higher power, it can be a

must believe in something, and that you must have some foundation that you can look to
for hope, encouragement, and strength when times get tough.
,onor refers to how you live your life. "hen you pass away and people look

Final Thoughts ! Putting College %nto Pers1ective
&ake Sure #ou Take The <ight A11roach To College
There are two ways to look at college# The first is to look at it as your $last
chance+ to go cra3y and have a good time before you have to grow up and be an adult.
The second is to look at college as your spring4board for the ne&t N7 years of your life.
ItPs an opportunity to lay the foundation for your future success. ItPs a chance to acquire
the knowledge, the skills, the degree, and the important connections... that will help set
you up for success throughout your entire future.
If you follow the first approach, you might have a lot of fun 'although you
probably wonPt remember much of your e&perience(, and when you graduate, you wonPt
be able to get a 0ob right awayJ and when you do, youPll probably end up bouncing around
in a few meaningless 0obs. /ouPll get $stuck+ doing something 0ust to pay the bills while
you try to find something better. If you dont take your opportunity seriously, you wont
get anything out of it, and ultimately, you wont get anything for it.
If you follow the second approach, however, youPll set yourself up for a great deal
of success once you get out of college. /ouPll have the good grades, valuable e&periences,
important connections 'which will help you immensely when it comes to getting 0ob
interviews and getting your foot in the door(. /oull also be able to take with you a great
rVsumV and some outstanding letters of recommendation. All these things will help you
ma&imi3e your potential for success. "hats most important to understand, is that you
can take care of business and still have lots of fun too. 1ust make sure you take care of the
business when it needs to be taken care of.

Today is the beginning of a new
day. God has given me this day
to use as I will. I can waste it or
use it for good. What I do today
is important because I am
exchanging a day of my life for
it. When tomorrow comes, this
day will be gone forever, leaving
something in its place I have
traded for it. I want it to be gain,
not loss good, not evil
success, not failure in order that
I shall not regret the price I paid
for it, because the future is ust a
whole string of nows.!

I commit to graduating from college.
