Our goal at Emmerton Elementary is for every student to become a proficient reader. We are working toward this goal from our Kindergarteners learning their letters/sounds to all students reading challenging books. We have a school-wide reading incentive program to encourage and reward students for developing their reading skills and reading great books! All students will be assessed and informed of their reading level to start the challenge. As students read books, they will begin accumulating points for their classes/teams. Students will be recognized on our reading wall of fame and and they will receive prizes as they achieve their reading goals. Students will work to earn as many points/prizes as they can all year long.
Reading Challenge Rules for Kindergarten In Kindergarten students will earn points as they learn the alphabet, letter sounds, and sight (rainbow) words. By January, we will expect that kindergarten students are beginning to read early books. We expect that kindergarten students will know 100 sight words by the end of the school year. Ask your childs teacher for a copy of the words. Students will earn prizes as they progress through the chart.

Students select an Accelerated Reader book at their level, which has a predetermined point value. Our library books are color-coded and labeled with both the Accelerated Reader level and point value. 3. After reading, students take an Accelerated Reader comprehension quiz on the computer. Students who pass quizzes earn points in the challenge. 4. All reading counts, including books parents read to their children and books read in class as long as students pass the comprehension quiz independently.
