My Island Project
Humanities 6
Directions:

1. Using the pumpkin template (provided by your teacher), create a map of a fictional
island.

2. Use colored pencils to neatly color the map and its features. All physical features
should be colored accurately (NOTE: Blue is only used for water). Use a ruler for all
straight lines.
3. On the back of your map, write four GEOGRAPHY questions (please include the answers)
which your classmates will answer about particular features on your map. (Examples: What
is the highest elevation on the map? In which direction must I go to get from the volcano to
the river?)

Your map MUST INCLUDE each of the following items:

Map Title: The name of your island should be incorporated into the title. Be creative!

Map Key: Explains all lines, symbols, and colors used on the map.

Compass Rose: Shows cardinal directions AND intermediate directions. Labeled
correctly!

Scale Bar: The measuring line to determine appropriate distance on the map. (NOTE:
The distance between each degree of latitude is approximately 69 miles.)

At least 2 Cities: one of the cities must be a capital city.

At least 3 different Physical Water Features- A river, lake, bay, etc. Each water feature
should be labeled. (refer back to Section 2.3 for help!)

2 different Physical Land Features - mountain, canyon, plateau, etc. Each physical
feature should be labeled. (Look at section 2.3).

Place your island somewhere on the map of the world where no other land currently
exists and it would be surrounded by water. Include at least two lines of latitude AND
two lines of longitude on your map that indicate this location.
o (NOTE1: The distance between each degree of latitude is approximately 69 miles.)
o (NOTE 2: Be sure that the features on the island are appropriate to the location of
the island on Earth.) (ex) no tropical island near the Arctic Circle.
