Angela Mangum multiplication/addition lesson plan Taylorsville Fall 2014

Lesson 2 Multiplication
Commutative Property & The Associative Property
http://tiggersmultiplication.weebly.com
.
Math Concept(s):
4th Grade:
Indiana Academic Standard(s):
Standard:

4.C.7: Show how the order in which two numbers are multiplied (commutative property)
and how numbers are grouped in multiplication (associative property) will not change
the product. Use these properties to show that numbers can by multiplied in any order.

4.AT.3: Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison (e.g., interpret 35 = 5 7 as
a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7, and 7 times as many as 5). Represent
verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Learning Outcome for this Lesson:
Students will understand the relationship between various multiplication facts/products and that
order does not matter.

Math Activity:
Students will fill out the missing portions of the multiplication table. They will then review
some of the multiplication rules.

Possible Student Ideas, Strategies, and Misconceptions:

Launch/Engage:
Set Goals and Self Regulate
Posted Goal: We will change the order of multiplication problems in order to find patterns in
multiplication. We will find multiplication equations that have the same product.

Exploration:
Action/Expression, Expression of Knowledge
Students will be given a product and ask to fine the multiples. Example: Students will be given
the number 24 and ask to find the multiplication problems that have a product of 24.
After we have done a few of these together, students will be given a graphic organizer and ask to
make their own multiplication problems. I will set a time giving them about 10 minutes to do so.

Students will then be ask to share their results visually, verbally or by writing them on the white
board.

Assessment Plan:
I will monitor the students progress while they are working.
