The Perry County Con 2

PCCD Annual Poster Contest
Every year, the Perry County Conservation District holds a poster contest to raise interest in
conservation among our countys students. This years theme is Local Heroes: Your
Hardworking Pollinators. We hope that by researching about pollinators, students will find a
variety of opinions from a variety of sources. Pollinators are important to each citizen. There are
many reasons for pollinator decline. We would like students to focus on solutions to increase
pollinators and their habitats. Providing accurate information is essential. Find out what
pollinators are in our area and see what our community is doing to help them. The contest will be
divided into three age groups:

Posters should be packaged so they remain flat when sent for judging.
All posters must be created by an individual student rather than a team of students.

your poster. Each entry must have signed entry form to be eligible for judging.
Any Perry County student from grade 2nd-8th is eligible to enter the contest.

Information will be provided to teachers at Perryville Elementary and High School as well as
Anne Watson Elementary and Bigelow High School. Perry county home school students are also
welcome to participate. The winning poster from each category will have a chance to be entered
into the NACDs National Contest to compete with students from all over the nation for a first
prize of $200. All entries must be received by November 13

The Perry County Con 3
Pollinator Edition

About 75% of all flowering plant species
need the help of animals to move their
heavy pollen grains from plant to plant
for fertilization.

Pollinators include around 1,000 vertebrates such
as birds, bats, and small mammals.

Most pollinators (about 200,000 species) are
beneficial insects such as flies, beetles, wasps,
ants, butterflies, moths, and bees.

Bees can fly at about 7 miles per hour, and have
to beat their wings 190 times per second to do it!

New Threat to
Arkansas Woodlands

The little guy above may not look scary, but what his
species could do to the Arkansas ash tree population is
truly terrifying!

First identified in the US in 2002, the Emerald
Ash Borer Beetle (EAB) is an invasive pest that
can kill an ash tree within two years. If measures
are not taken to combat this invasion, Americas
ash tree population will be wiped out within a
matter of years. The EAB is a non-native species
and was most likely imported in wood packing
material from Asia. Although the EAB has not
made its way into Perry County just yet, as of
August 2014 it has been confirmed in 6 Arkansas
counties-Hot Spring, Clark, Dallas, Nevada,
Ouachita, and Columbia County. That number is
expected to grow. Although the EAB can be
transported by loggers, it is believed that fire
wood transported by campers and hunters is the
primary way the EAB is spreading through
Arkansas counties. While it is difficult to control
insects such as the EAB because they feed under
the bark, there are several insecticide options
available to combat the problem and potentially
save the afflicted tree. If you suspect an EAB
infestation or would like more information,
contact your local Extension Office or Sam Kim
at the Arkansas State Plant Board (501) 312-
7050.
