Dear Members and Friends,
J
oin me in celebrating the Garden Club of Virginias great
achievements during 2013-2014.
Highlights during the past 12 months include the GCVs signature
event, Historic Garden Week, and the 55th Conservation Forum on
Climate Change in Virginia, Learning to Adapt. We continued the
restoration work on the gardens at the Edgar Allan Poe Museum in
Richmond and are participants in The Mountaintop Project:
Revealing Jeffersons Monticello with the restoration and
preservation of Mulberry Row and Jeffersons Historic Kitchen
Road. The restoration of the original Jeffersonian landscape at
Poplar Forest in Bedford County has neared completion.
For our 2020 Centennial Project the GCV began a partnership with
Virginia State Parks to support new interactive exhibits in the state
parks visitor centers. They will be designed to tell the story of
the natural world and the cultural history of each state park.
The year culminated with Horticulture Field Day at Pharsalia in
Nelson County. Outstanding workshops, knowledgeable speakers
and fascinating demonstrations provided an extraordinary day.
It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the Garden Club of
Virginia. Incoming President Jeanette Cadwallender and I thank you
for your devoted service and loyal support as the GCV continues to
make a difference in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
With my sincere appreciation,

Ann Gordon Evans
President 201214
Since 1920 the
Garden Club of Virginia
has been dedicated to
the enhancement of the
commonwealth through
environmental conservation,
horticultural education and
historic landscape restoration.
We accomplish this work,
in part, by operating the largest
and oldest statewide house
and garden tour in the nation,
Historic Garden Week.
Thirty-three hundred members
from 47 garden clubs
across the state work
to make our gifts to Virginia
communities possible.
Celebrating and preserving
the natural beauty of our
commonwealth are at
the heart of all we do.

Executive Director
Bessie Bocock Carter, Hetty Harrison, Isabella
deLacy Gray, Annabel Josephs and Elizabeth
Cabell Dugdale are all names youll see in this
Year in Review, and will most likely recognize.
These are women who wanted to make a
difference and make friends. They joined
like-minded companions in a garden club.
Known for their vision and can-do attitudes,
they would distinguish themselves in conservation, preservation,
ower arranging or horticulture. All are important aspects of a
garden club and the Garden Club of Virginia. Each woman
mobilized and inspired others in their clubs or in GCV committees
and effectively multiplied her impact. They did not do it alone.
Treasurers Report
The Garden Club of Virginia operates on a scal year that began
on July 1, 2013 and ended June 30, 2014. The budget for this scal
year was presented by the Treasurer to the Board of Directors for a
vote and then to the membership at the 2013 May Annual Meeting.
Our income for the year of approximately $2 million exceeded
expenses of nearly $1.2 million for a net income of $877,835,
which is used to support operations in the coming year.
The revenue
from Historic
Garden Week
is one of the
largest sources
of income each
year for the GCV.
The related expenses
are netted out from this income,
and the remaining funds are used to support our restoration
projects around the commonwealth. The other primary sources
of income for funding the works of the GCV are membership
dues, donations and a ve-percent draw from our investment
portfolio. While dues income has remained stable, the increase in
donations, sponsorships and investment income has enabled us to
balance our budget.
If that sounds familiar it is because the same thing is happening
right now. Year in Review brings this into focus so we see contem-
porary women carrying on the work of these named women.
Each year new names appear in Year in Review women doing
something to make a difference, mobilizing others, multiplying
their impact. Your club, the GCV and your community are made
richer because of you.
Lynn McCashin
Executive Director
The Garden Club of Virginia
The expenses for the GCV
include maintaining our
headquarters, management
salaries, insurance and the
cost of our yearly audit.
To communicate with our
membership, we maintain our
website and publish the Journal
quarterly. Our budget includes contributions toward our annual
fall and spring meetings and three yearly ower shows. We budget
to break even on our schools and workshops.
Our assets of approximately $7.6 million include the Kent-Valentine
House property, our cash accounts and investment portfolio. At
the end of June 2014, the GCV Endowment was valued at over
$4 million, which is more than half of GCVs total assets. Our
nancial records are audited annually, and we received a clean
opinion. As a 501(c)(3) organization, our Federal Form 990 is led
each year and is available for public review.
The Garden Club of Virginia is in a strong nancial position for
our members to continue the work of our mission throughout the
Commonwealth of Virginia.
Respectfully submitted,

Anne G. Baldwin, GCV Treasurer

Serving the Commonwealth:
Club Highlights
GCV celebrates its six districts and
the activities of its 47 member clubs.
Rivanna Garden Club
In their 90th year of GCV membership, Rivanna Garden
Club has surveyed, identied, and is now tagging trees the club
replaced after hurricane damage at the Miller School, site of
their 1987 Common Wealth Award winning project. As part of
their 2011 Common Wealth Award efforts, members continue
to safeguard the banks of the James Rivers Hatton Ferry, the
last hand-poled ferry in the U.S., with plantings to prevent soil
erosion. Thanks to Rivannas persistent stewardship and
practical horticultural knowledge, a species native to Albemarle,
hypericum kalmianum Gemo, St. Johns Wort, is among the
plantings now thriving there despite the challenges of periodic
submersion and invasive japanese hops. Rivanna has supported
Nature Camp in Vesuvius since 1956. It also maintains the
only Lilac Test Garden in the GCV with over 65 varieties
carefully transferred and nurtured between the gardens
of four members over eight decades.
2
The Spotswood Garden Club
The Spotswood Garden Club furthered its community
contributions during its 90th year by completing a two-year
landscaping project at the Virginia Quilt Museum. The museum
stands across Main Street from an earlier club landscaping effort
at the Hardesty-Higgins House Visitor Center. Spotswood
continued refurbishing stone bases for two roadside bronze
statues of turkeys that welcome visitors. The club spearheaded
the statues creation nearly 60 years ago when Rockingham
County was reputedly the nations turkey capital. Spotswood
hosted the GCVs 2013 and 2014 Lily
Shows with the second year
themed Oh, Shenandoah
for the areas storied river,
valley and mountains.
The club also launched
its website.
The Garden Club of the Northern Neck
Environmental stewardship has become a hallmark of The
Garden Club of the Northern Neck. It shows on area restaurant
tables. Placemats explain the importance of protecting Cat Point
Creek. The GCVs 2012 Bessie Bocock Carter Conservation Award,
won by the club with the Northern Neck Land Conservancy, fund-
ed public education about Cat Points 46,800 acres, which support
a pristine tidal freshwater system and wildlife habitats. The club
awarded scholarships to two teachers for the Chesapeake Bay Foun-
dations graduate-level summer program about environmental threats
to the bay and also hosted a conservation forum focused on the bay.
Additional grants were made to Wild Life Refuge and Rehabilitation,
Mary Ball Washington Museum and Library, and Rices Tavern.
3
Chatham Garden Club
Have clippers, will travel. Chatham Garden Club
members have grabbed gardening gear and headed out to work on
projects that include helping Rotarians give a local nursing home a
landscaping makeover. The club has found an effective way to fund
some projects and activities: an annual geranium sale that paints the
town red just in time for Historic Garden Week while raising roughly
$1,500. One beneciary was a joint milestone preservation project:
renovation of the old Southern Railway train depot. For its part,
the club underwrote site preparation for landscaping. The nearly
century-old depot was in Garden Day last year, and now houses the
Pittsylvania County Public Library History Center.

6 7
Gabriella Garden Club
Gabriella Garden Club members dig their DIG site.
Since 2006 the club has supported landscaping and beautication
at Danville Interchange Garden No. 9, one of 15 garden sites along
streets and highways. The city maintains the gardens, each adopted
by a business or organization whose sponsorship is noted by a sign.
Gabriellas support translates to a $3,000 annual commitment;
plus, the club has given trees in memory of members. Gabriella has
also helped spruce up landscaping at a local boys and girls club.
Gabriella members call 2014 their Run for the Roses, as they
prepare to host the GCVs next two rose shows.
4
Fauquier and Loudoun Garden Club
The Fauquier and Loudoun Garden Club said to have
hosted the rst ower show in Virginia is entering its 100th year.
During the year members will meet in club founders homes:
Belvoir, site of the GCV 2014 Favretti Fellows studies; Oatlands,
a GCV restoration site; Oak Hill, President James Monroes home;
Foxcroft, a school for young women; and Stoke, the then-home of
Mrs. Eleanor Truax Harris, the GCV daffodil test collection founder.
Fauquier-Loudoun is a GCV founding club and member of the
Garden Club of America. Fauquier-Loudouns recent work includes
nalizing submissions of two historic gardens, Little Oatlands and
Homewood, to the Smithsonian Archive of American Gardens.
Club achievements include saving and maintaining Historic Goose
Creek Bridge, a four-arch stone span
built during Thomas Jeffersons
presidency. The club hosts a
bi-annual symposium as
its sole fundraiser.
The next one will
be in February 2015.
5
The Nansemond River Garden Club
The Capitol became an elegant forum for Governor Terry
McAuliffes inauguration thanks to The Nansemond River Garden
Clubs arrangements. So says a resolution passed by Virginias General
Assembly. The year also found the club partnering with organizations
to help create two gardens. The rst is a neighborhood vegetable
garden at the Salvation Armys new physical health and education
center. The second will be a ower garden at an historic house, now
home to the Nansemond Suffolk Historical Society. Club members
continue to work on their Common Wealth Award-winning project,
a heritage garden at historic Cedar Hill Cemetery. The club operates
and supports the Ecology Camp it founded in 1981.

The Blue Ridge Garden Club
The Blue Ridge Garden Club sells holiday wreaths each
year with the proceeds going to support charitable and civic
organizations, both in Rockbridge County and the Commonwealth,
including Roots and Shoots Intergenerational School Garden,
Rockbridge Area Conservation Council, Nature Camp, and
Scenic Virginia. Within the club, exhibits chairman, Ann Jones,
came up with an innovative idea to promote participation in club
ower-arranging exhibits and GCV ower shows. With the help of
mentors Elizabeth Boetsch, Barbara Goldsten, and Chris Howison,
Ann solicited members to sign up for ower-arranging teams.
Each month, team members meet with mentors to interpret the
schedule, share ideas, and work together on their arrangements.
Artistic assignments have ranged from Hoarding to A Visit
to the Hardware Store all contemporary. Participation
has increased dramatically and, in addition to having fun,
some longtime members have received their rst blue ribbon.
See one of Blue Ridges blue ribbon winners on page 21.

GCV Awards
Nestled amidst magnolia in the Monroe Ward district of downtown
Richmond stands the Kent-Valentine House, the antebellum residence
that is the bustling statewide headquarters of the Garden Club of
Virginia. Kent-Valentine visitors numbered over 1,600 this year as it
was the site of the Presidents Luncheon, 59 GCV committee meetings,
6 workshops, 9 member club meetings and the venue for over 500 guests
attending private events.
Recognized as a splendid example of Greek Revival architecture, the
house with its soaring columns, 14-foot ceilings, and oor-to-ceiling
windows was nearly razed in 1971 before GCV launched the areas rst
adaptive-use restoration. Its easement granted by the Valentine family
in 1972 was the rst Virginia accepted in the city of Richmond.
Eighteenth-century furnishings grace the interiors, and are all gifts from
GCV members and friends.

The 55th Conservation Forum
The Conservation Forum is open to GCV members and the
public. Our Forum this year was held at Montalto at Monticello.
The subject was Climate Change in Virginia: Learning to Adapt.
A packed house listened as four speakers explained the whys of a
changing climate and presented useful information to employ in
our attempts to adapt. We enjoyed a glorious day atop the small
mountain, and after lunching together outdoors participated in
tours of Mr. Jeffersons garden, his house, and Mulberry Row, a
current GCV restoration project.
Conservation
The Garden Club of Virginia has directed
public attention to conservation issues of
statewide relevance for over 94 years.
In 2014, GCV supported the preservation
of the viewshed along the historic Lower
James River and a continued moratorium
on uranium mining in Virginia. GCV also
supported legislative positions related to
clean water, recurrent ooding and plastic
bag fees. Established in 1921 as GCVs
rst standing committee, Conservation
and Beautication provides educational
opportunities annually through the
Workshop, the Forum and Legislative Day.

Jeffersons Vegetable Garden led by Peggy
Cornett, Monticellos curator of plants.
Center Right: Keynote speaker, Robert Talley,
President, Talley & Associates, delivered
A Global Overview of Climate Change
drawing from the latest Intergovernmental Panel
on Climate Change report. With temperature
increase already likely, a dramatic reduction in
greenhouse gas emissions is necessary (50% by
2050) to avoid worst impacts.
At the same time, world
population will rise by 33%
and global energy demand
will rise 100% by 2050.

Conservation Workshop
In perfect alignment of purpose, Conservation
joined with the Horticulture Committee this
year to produce a remarkable workshop at
Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Natives vs
Invaders. Root for the Natives! For more see
Conservation and Horticulture Workshop, p14.
Legislative Day
Legislative Day participants met with fellow members of the
Virginia Conservation Network to study legislative issues selected
by the GCV Board for discussion. Small group meetings provided
in-depth discussion and focused on effective ways to connect
with state legislators. Secretary of Natural Resources Molly Ward
attended this session and met with GCV members.
The Elizabeth Cabell
Dugdale Award
The Elizabeth Cabell Dugdale
Award for Meritorious Achieve-
ment in Conservation is named
for Mrs. Arthur A. Dugdale of
The Ashland Garden Club who
originated the Conservation Forum
55 years ago. It is presented to
an organization, industry or an
individual who is not a GCV
member for outstanding work in
conservation. This years award
went to Corbin Harwood for her
untiring attention to the subject of
uranium mining in Virginia.
Bessie Bocock Carter Conservation Award
The family of past GCV President Bessie Carter
instituted this generous monetary award for
the implementation of a conservation project
that serves as a catalyst for collaborative
community action. Presented annually, it
recognizes natural resource conservation or
environmental protection within the
Commonwealth. This years award winner was
Albemarle Garden Club for their Bog Garden
plan, which will be constructed at the
Booker T. Washington Park in Charlottesville
and used for community education.
de Lacy Gray Memorial Medal for Conservation
The de Lacy Gray Medal was awarded
to Betsy Rawls Agelasto of The Virginia
Beach Garden Club for her exceptional
dedication to conservation in the common-
wealth. She has made outstanding efforts
to further knowledge of Virginias natural
resources and to encourage their wise use.
She was recognized for her long-standing
involvement with the Conservation
Committee and GCVs Legislative Day.
Betsys mother, Ann Peace Rawls, of The
Franklin Garden Club, was posthumously
awarded the de Lacy Gray Medal in 1988.

Annual Meeting Horticulture Exhibit
May 13-15, 2014
Leesburg Garden Club
For this exhibition, The Birds and the
Bees, clubs were asked to research the use
of pollinators in the garden based
on the March Journal article,
If You Dont Do Anything Else,
Plant Milkweed. Exhibiting clubs
collected a display of plants that
attract birds, bees, butteries,
moths, or other animals that aid
in the transfer of pollen leading to
fertilization and its benets.
Horticulture Field Day
Sixteen speakers and hands-on
activities covered topics such
as peonies, layered gardening
techniques, bats, propagation,
cooking with herbs and urban
chicken keeping
at Foxie Morgans
historic home,
Pharsalia, in
Nelson County.
Foxie is a member
of The Lynchburg
Garden Club.
Experts enticed
members with herb and cutting
garden tours. A Farm-to-Table
luncheon served on the grounds
offered a busy days respite
with magnicent views of the
mountains and apple orchards.
Horticulture
The Horticulture Committee
provided a seamless year
of themed educational
opportunities beginning
with Lets Go Native,
Septembers Journal
article dealing with the
role of invasive plants on
the ecosystem, and ending
with a full-day program
in May at Pharsalia.
Conservation and Horticulture Workshop
September 23, 2013
Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden
Two GCV committees joined forces at Lewis Ginter
Botanical Garden for the rst combined Conservation
and Horticulture Workshop to explore native
alternatives to invasive exotics. The program
featured Kevin Heffernan, stewardship biologist,
and Cole Burrell, author and expert on the use
of native plants for blending nature and culture
through artistic design. If you missed this
program, visit www.gcvirginia.org/horticulture for
informative materials from these speakers.
Board of Governors Meeting
Horticulture Exhibit
October 15-17, 2013
The Garden Club of Danville
The Board of Governors exhibit playfully
featured Ugly Plants in Ugly Containers!
Club horticulture chairmen were asked to
display an invasive plant in an unsightly
container and to provide solutions to
control the plant. The Petersburg Garden
Club captured the dubious honor of
ugliest plant in the ugliest container with
their winning specimen, Gomphocarpus
physocarpa. Dont miss these and other
delightfully hideous horticulture entries on

Standing room only has become
the norm for Flower Arranging
School, and this year was no
exception. In late October the
membership was treated to a
fast-paced demonstration as Jane
Godshalk, AIFD, brought us her Bouquets in Motion show. An
instructor at Longwood Gardens, she engaged a receptive crowd with
a compelling combination of screen images and live demonstration,
during which she interpreted GCV ower arranging styles.

Restoration
GCVs restoration projects dot the map of Virginia with
recent projects located in each of GCVs six state districts.
Members have underwritten nearly 50 major restorations
by operating Historic Garden Week, now hosting 30,000
tour visitors every April. The best part of the story is that
net event proceeds are invested in restoring and maintaining
important public sites in Virginia communities.
Monticello, Charlottesville
This summer, the Garden Club of Virginia broke
ground on a well-researched and coordinated
effort with the Thomas Jefferson Foundation to
reconstruct the lanes as designed by Jefferson on
the mountaintop at Monticello. With the GCVs
recreation of Mulberry Row and the Kitchen
Road, visitors will soon be able to walk along the
paths familiar to Jefferson in and around the busy
service areas of the house and plantation.
Poe Museum, Richmond
Ground was broken on the Enchanted Garden at the Poe Museum.
Repairs to the old brick paving and the reworking of a ramp make
the garden accessible while retaining the patina associated with this
1930s garden. Planting of the garden is scheduled for fall 2014.
Poplar Forest, Lynchburg
Last year GCV celebrated the return of Jeffersons double row of
trees connecting the house and the mound at Poplar Forest. This year
GCV celebrated the re-planting of the clumps Jefferson designed
for the front of the house. This unusual planting feature was in
fashion in Europe during Jeffersons lifetime, and American
contemporaries Alexander Hamilton and George Washington also
planted clumps at their respective homes. Those at Poplar Forest are
the rst to be recreated in a federal period garden. Plans are in place
for restoration of the carriage turnaround in front of the house.
Historic Henry County Courthouse, Martinsville
The GCV completed Phase I of the work at the Historic Henry
County Courthouse in 2012. This spring the City of Martinsville
completed Phase II. The result of this cooperative effort is a
beautiful and dignied forecourt to the Courthouse that enhances
the building and provides a pedestrian-friendly arrival area and
improved trafc circulation.
