Design Lab: Oxidising Property of Halogens

(Cl2, Br2, I2)

Name: Vivek Shah

Subject: Chemistry HL
Date of Lab: Monday. August 31th, 2009
IB#: IBDP1

Aim: To investigate the oxidising property of halogens.

Research Question: Which halogen element (Cl2, Br2, and I2) is the strongest oxidising agent?

Variables:
Independent – The aqueous solutions of halogens (NaCl, NaBr, and NaI) because it is the
variable that we are changing to compare their oxidising power
Dependent – The colour change of the solution after the individual halogens are added (Br2 & I2
in NaCl, Cl2 & I2 in NaBr, Cl2 & Br2 in NaI)
Controlled – Volume of halogens, volume of aqueous solutions, temperature of solutions,

Apparatus:
• Test Tube
• Test Tube Rack
• Test Tube Holder
• Measuring Cylinder
• Aqueous Solutions (NaCl, NaBr,
and NaI)
• Halogen Elements (Cl2, Br2, and
I2)

Method:
1. Measure 10 cm3 of each solution.
2. Fill six different test tubes with two containing NaCl, two containing NaBr, and two
containing NaI.
3. Add Br2 to one cylinder of NaCl and I2 to one cylinder of NaCl
4. Add Cl2 to one cylinder of NaBr and I2 to one cylinder of NaBr
5. Add Cl2 to one cylinder of NaI and Br2 one cylinder of NaI
6. Record observations and compare your data
