Major topics of instruction will include essays, novels and vocabulary development. American literature from its inception through the mid-nineteenth century will be covered. A research and critical analysis project will be completed. American literature in the late 19th and 20th centuries will be studied; modern American drama will be included. Interrupting, arguing, inappropriate gestures, teasing, put-downs, rude comments, etc. are all examples of disrespectful and unacceptable behavior. Prepared means: to make oneself ready to do or deal with something Be to class on time and in your assigned seat ready to work when the tardy bell rings. Any student not in the classroom before the tardy bell rings will be marked tardy. Be prepared for each class every day by bringing appropriate materials and assignments to class.

Following directions means: Listen and respond to instructions the first time they are given. If directions need to be repeated or explained in more detail, please do not interrupt, but respectfully wait for the appropriate time to ask. Directions may be verbal or nonverbal, therefore, follow all directions before completing an assignment.
Everyone is expected to exemplify the values of Harker Heights and the Killeen Independent School district. I also expect students to acknowledge the ethos of the class:

Grade Weight Grades are based on two categories. Formative: Formative grades evaluate students during the learning process. These grades include, but are not limited to: daily assignments, homework, quizzes, journals, and presentations. 40% (35% Pre-AP) Summative: Summative grades evaluate what a student has learned. These grades include tests, projects, and essays. 60% (65% Pre-AP)

3 Late Work Policy Late work will be accepted for two days with at least 20% reduction. Every day afterwards, the assignment will be subject to no less than a 30% reduction. After five days total, the assignment will be given a zero.
Cheating/Plagiarism: Such conduct is not permitted and will result in a zero. It works both ways. Its not worth it. Dont risk it.
Make up Work Students will be allowed to make up work for 5 days after return from absence. Make up tests must be taken before or after school. It is the responsibility of the student to get any missed work before or after class.
Tutoring: Tutoring will be offered Monday through Thursday before and after school.
Extra Credit: Students will be given opportunities to earn extra credit, but this will be discussed during tutoring hours only.
* The most important rule in this class is to have fun and challenge yourself. This class will be what you make it. So lets make it AWESOME!!!!
