Greek Mythology Comparison with the Cheyenne Story

How are two completely different culture's religions the same and different? The Greek
stories of the gods and goddesses are in some ways similar to the Cheyenne story of Maheo.
Even though these two cultures were worlds apart, almost on the other side of the Earth you
would be surprised to see how similar the two stories are. Many of the values are different as is
the plot of the story. "The Making of Gods and People" and "How the World was made" both
have the intent to teach lessons to people.
The stories are more different than they are the same. The Greek were polytheistic
whereas the Cheyenne were monotheistic. The Cheyenne perspective is more focused around
kindness and helping each other, being selfless and thinking of others before yourself. A large
portion of the Greek belief is based around punishment and revenge. Zeus killing Cronus in
revenge and him sentencing Atlas to hold the weight of the heavens for all eternity is an
example. The Greeks were very focused around the creation of humans and the story involved
mostly humans. The Cheyenne were very interested in nature and animals. This shows in the
way they treat nature versus the Greek. The First Nations show more respect to animals than
the Greek. Only in the end did the humans get created in the last paragraph. A leader/ruler is
enforced in the Greek mythology. An example being, "Zeus overturned Cronus, and banished
the Titans. After that he ruled supreme." In the Cheyenne story it is more about the collective
group effort in which everybody helps out. The Cheyenne tale was much less complex than the
Greek one. There was no mention of death or underworld in the Cheyenne account whereas the
Greek story held plenty of death and had a lot of information on the underworld. The humans in
the Greek story were made by Prometheus out of clay, opposed to Maheo making them out of
his rib bones. It is very evident of the differences in culture and ways of thinking between the
two societies.
There are a lot of differences but there are some similarities as well. In both stories the
main god is humanlike, taking the shape of a man. The stories explain how the entire earth was
formed, leaving nothing out. Prometheus is very alike Maheo. He is kind and thoughtful. They
both created humans, for the same reasons as well. Both of them thought that the world was
meant for something, that something should be made. Maheo stated, "What good is power... If it
is not used to make a world and people in it." The main reason for the stories is to teach lessons
to the people who hear them. The Greek belief is more around bravery and fighting for what you
think is right. The Cheyenne is centred around respect and kindness and acts of service. It
shows with time that both of the protagonists in the story are male, but both accounts involve
females as well. The stories are similar in many aspects.
The story "The Making of Gods and People" and the tale "How the World Was Made"
have many similarities and lots of differences. Even though the two cultures most likely have
never seen each other the stories of how the Earth and everything on it are surprisingly similar.
The Greek and the Cheyenne are very different in how they think about the world and how they
portray their thoughts in the stories. Humans had to be created somehow, but by whom?
