FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Do I need to provide an accompanist? No, we provide a professional
accompanist. Put your music in a 1 binder and bring to the audition. Come
prepared to talk to the accompanist about your needs tempo, any repeats or cuts
when you come to the audition. Music for the accompanist must in your key
no transpositions will be made for you.
May I participate in spring sports and be in this show? It depends on the
sport. Some sports or activities baseball, golf, or color guard have too many
conflicts and you will have to choose one or the other. Basketball, wrestling is
usually fine. Check with the directors before the auditions.
What should I do if I dont have room for this class term 3/4? It depends.
You could talk to your counselor and discuss possibilities of taking a City College
class during the summer or during Term !.
Who makes the decision about the cast? Three directors: Riley Berris, Michael
Kiyoi and Carolyn Teraoka-Brady all have equal input about the cast. Only these
three (and the accompanist) are in the room at your audition. However, the callbacks
may be open to all students on the call back list.
How do I find a 1 minute monologue? We want each student to prepare a
monologue (memorized) Do not exceed the minute, or you will be asked to stop. In
general, a one minute monologue is less than a half page of text. No teen
monologues. See the directors for additional information.
How do I select an audition song? Dont wait! If you havent selected a song
yet, decide how much time you have before the audition date to prepare and
memorize a song. You may want to select a song that you already know that shows
your vocal range. If you are trying to choose between songs that you already know,
perhaps it might be helpful to know what character in the play you are auditioning
for.
Can I sing a classical song or pop song? No. Sing a musical theatre song.
Could I sing a song from the show? Yes
When will we know if we are called back? As soon as humanly possible.
What will the call backs involve? Call backs at SMHS mean that we want to see
you again. We will ask you to learn a song from the show, and then perform part of
the song. You will probably get some direction and need to perform one or two times
again. Being involved in the call back process does not
guarantee you are in the cast. Not being involved in the call back does not
mean you have been cut.
Grades. You will need to maintain a 2.5 GPA and above average citizenship. (S, 0)
these are the same requirements for sports.
Procrastination. This will prevent you from finding out how great you can be if you
prepare! It is never too early to do the background work needed for
preparing your audition song. Prepare the same way an athlete prepares
for a place on a varsity sport, it is part of the process.
