MEGR 3090-004 HW #1
9/20/14
Objective:
The objective of this homework was to learn how to create a simulation in Star CCM along with the
monitors and flow visualization scenes to be able to determine flow characteristics around a blunt body.
Lessons Learned:
1. How to import geometry into Star CCM and create regions from that geometry.
2. Creating mesh continua's in the regions and set up the physics of flows.
3. Run simulations with different stopping criteria and interation lengths.
4. Create plots to monitor the drag coefficient of a blunt body.
3. Create scalar and vector scenes to observe the pressure and flow direction around a blunt body.
6. Create streamlines and add them to scenes to visualize flow around a blunt body.

From the above table, it is difficult to see how grid size affects the drag force coefficient. Keeping the
prism layers the same and decreasing the grid size to 30% causes a slight increase in the coefficient of
drag by .002. What is confusing is that reducing the size down further, to 23% of the original size,
causes the drag coefficient to go back down by almost .001. With this limited set of data, it is difficult
to determine the effect of grid size on the drag coefficient.
The effect of prism layers on the coefficient of drag is a little better to determine. Keeping the grid size
at 30% and doubling the number of layers caused a very slight increase in the drag coefficient, 0.00007.
Doubling the layer thickness along with doubling the number of layers caused it to increase slightly
further.
Part + (discussio! o$ e$$ects o$ "rid size a!d %rism a&er %arameters o! C)D %redictio!s):
It can be seen in the pictures and graphs in this assignment that it doesn't seem like the changes made in
this assignment had a huge effect on the resultant pictures and graphs. Changing the base size of the
mesh had a big effect on how the mesh looked. Reducing the base size to 30% caused the number of
cells in the mesh to increase dramatically, as did reducing it again down to 23% of the original size.
Changing the prism layer set-ups also changed how the mesh looked, but I couldn't tell a huge
difference in the CFD results after changing the simulation parameters.
