Artistic Research Report

Research question
Which strategies and exercises in my daily practice will help me prepare to perform
Chopin etudes op. 10 nr. 1 & 2 and op. 25 no. 6 & Rachmaninoffs Corelli varations on an
artistic high level?

Of myself
I noticed in my recordings that a lot of the mistakes happen because I
(I) either do not have the memorization of the text fully secured
(II) technically have the material, but I get distracted mentally quite fast
(III) lose my inner forward singing

Of my network
The pianists in my network surprisingly came with very similar feedback. They said that
if I messed up a passage, particularly in Rachmaninoff, that I also forgot the secondary
attributes of the music such as dynamics, line and phrasing. In other words, the playing
becomes flat a bit before a difficult spot and then mistakes arise.

- I did a literature research in this period and found several practice strategies.
- Practice diary
- Experiments with mental practice and other strategies

Outcome so far
- Check the kinesthetic work for inefficient/ineffective movements
- Mental practice away from the instrument, with the score helped to secure
especially the difficult spots
- Delayed continuity practice helped to achieve better inner forward singing

Translation to intervention
Seperate use of the found practice strategies from the experiments

Organization of intervention
Use one practice strategie exclusively for 1 week, after that a mock performance with
recording.
