Assignment Sheet 2

Class IX Subject : Physics

1. Name the physical quantity on which the inertia of a body depends upon.
2. State the universal law of gravitation. Derive its expression.
3. What conclusion can you draw about the motion, velocity and acceleration of a body from the
displacement time graph given below ? Give reason for your answer.

4. Obtain mathematically the first law of motion from Newtons second law of motion.
5. A force 5 N gives a mass m1, an acceleration of 10m/s
2
and a mass m2, an acceleration of 20 m/s
2
.
What acceleration would it give if both the masses were tied together ?
6. When is an object said to be in free fall ? What is meant by acceleration due to gravity ? Derive an
expression for acceleration for an object falling freely.
7. List three differences between mass and weight.
8. (a) Derive the equation of position time relation from velocity-time graph of a body moving with a
uniform acceleration.
(b) Draw a velocity versus time graph for a stone thrown vertically upwards and then coming
downwards after attaining the maximum height
9. (a) Derive the equation of position velocity relation from velocity time graph of a body moving with
uniform acceleration.
(b) Draw a distance time graph for a stone thrown vertically upwards and then coming
downwards after attaining the maximum height.
10. (a) Define momentum. Write its S.I. units. State the law of conservation of momentum.
(b) Two objects each of mass 1.5 kg are moving in the same straight line but in opposite direction. The
velocity of each object is 2.5 m/s before collision during which they stuck together. Find the velocity of
combination after collision.
11. (a) Give reasons and state the law involved in the situations given below :
(i) A passenger falls to his front side when the bus suddenly stops.
(ii) The athletes are made to fall on a cushioned bed in a high jump.
(b) A child is pedaling a bicycle. Then he stops pedaling and the bicycle comes to rest after traveling certain
distance. Name the force which opposes the motion.
