Introduction: Students will work together to solve a problem presented in the video, Cookie Math. Based on the data given, when will the boy run out of cookies to eat? Content Area and Grade or Age Level of Students: 5th Grade Math Objectives: Students will work collaboratively using problem solving strategies to generate and compare two numerical patterns using two given rules. Standards Addressed: 5.OA.3 Generate two numerical patterns using two given rules. Identify apparent relationships between corresponding terms. Form ordered pairs consisting of corresponding terms from the two patterns, and graph the ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. 5.MP.1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Relative Advantage: Real world problems engage students while adding video allows students to visualize the problem increasing their understanding. Timeline: 90 minutes Materials: Graph paper, ChartTool line graphing tool, Video Cookie Math Grouping Strategies: Students will work in heterogeneous groups of 4. Each student has a Chromebook. Learning Activities: Students will watch the video introducing the problem. As a class we will review the steps for solving a problem. In groups students will recall the steps for solving a word problem and be ready to share them if called upon randomly. Students will break apart the task and assign jobs to each group member (pairs may still work together within the group). Students will have time to complete the problem. Teacher may facilitate group work when necessary by asking guiding questions. After 30-45 minutes (longer if students are still focused and working productively), have groups share their solutions or progress. Allow students who didnt finish to continue working on the task as they have time. At the completion of the task, have groups share their solution and reflect on strategies that were successful and unsuccessful. Assessment: Teacher will check for understanding of the steps for solving problems by calling on students randomly. Students will assess themselves and their peers on their group work skills with a rubric. Teacher will score the task based on a scoring rubric and student rubrics. Adaptations for Learners with Special Needs: Students who need support with language will have an opportunity to review the video. Students who need support with writing or math skills will be place in a group with peer support. Those students will work as a pair on their share of the assignment. Students have the option to make their line graph on paper or with an online math tool. Review video on coordinate planes. References: Learnzillion. Create a line graph.
