The full stop (also called a period) is used to show the end of a statement. Do not put a
space before a full stop. Use two spaces after the full stop when it is used at the end of a
sentence.
A full stop is also used to show abbreviations or with initials in a name. In this case, use
only one space after the full stop.
Comma ,
A comma is used to show a brief pause in a long sentence or for separating items in a list.
Do not put a space before the comma. Use one space after a comma.
Colon :
A colon is used before an eplanation, an eample or a list. Do not place any space
before the colon. Use one space after the colon.
Semi-colon ;
A semi!colon is used to "oin two complete and very closely!related sentences. Do not use
any space before the semi!colon. Use one space after the semi!colon.
Question mark ?
A #uestion mar$ is used at the end of a sentence that is a #uestion. Do not use a space
before the #uestion mar$. Use two spaces after the #uestion mar$.
Exclamation mark !
An eclamation mar$ is used to epress strong emotions such as pleasure, surprise or
horror. There should be no space before the eclamation mar$ and two spaces after it.
Apostrophe '
An apostrophe net to a letter s (%s) is used to show possession such as in the statement
Peters bag. Do not leave any space before or after an apostrophe when it is used with an
s to show possession. Use one space after an apostrophe that is used without an s, such as
in the statement the babies rattles.
The apostrophe is also used to show where letters were omitted in contracted words such
as don&t and they&re. Do not leave any space before or after the apostrophe when typing
contractions.

single or double #uotation mar$s may be used. Use one space before the opening
#uotation mar$s, but no space after it. Do not use any space before the closing #uotation
mar$s, but leave one space after it.
