During the first three years, students study all the formal
elements of Art & Design.

It is our intention that by the end of year 9 (K.S.3) all students

will have had a broad, thorough art education, one which
encompasses all of the aims – objectives & criteria set down in
the National Curriculum.

We work on themes which are changed each half term or on

termly basis depending upon the scope of the theme and upon
which elements are to be taught.

The first three years of our students’ art education are a

Foundation Course in the truest sense.

During the Course the students will:-

1.) Learn how to apply the formal elements of Art & Design-
line, tone, shape, pattern, texture, colour, surface, space,
movement etc.
2.) Learn how to record responses, including observations of
the natural and man-made environment.
3.) Learn how to gather resources and materials, how to use
them to stimulate and develop ideas, primarily through the
extensive use of a sketchbook.
4.) Learn to use a full range of media and how to experiment
with them.

5.) Learn how to understand the nature and function of art
terms – within their own work, within a historical context
and within the context of their own environment and
culture and how to respond to the natural environment.
6.) Learn how to evaluate their own and others’ work.
7.) Learn how to think, perceive, make decisions, work
through problems and develop an idea through conception
and realization.
