8 Millennial

Development Goals:
Afghanistan & Uganda
Claire Lewis
Johanna Brulotte
Eradicate Extreme Poverty
and Hunger
Uganda
36% of Afghans are below
the national poverty line
9 million are not able to
meet their basic needs
It doesn'tt look like their
situation is improving. As
of now, a target goal is to
get the poverty line to 24%
Afghanistan
There is a large percent of
people living on $1 a day.
Theyve been able to
decrease hunger by 15%
but malnutrition increased
by 30%
PEAP is an organized effort
to end poverty and hunger
in Uganda

Both countries have room for improvement but at this rate, Uganda
will be doing much better much sooner than Afghanistan.
Afghanistan should probably seek more help from other countries
like Uganda is doing,
Primary Education
Uganda
4 children in every family
receive free primary
education (which is 7 years
of schooling)
Depending on how they
do, some go onto
secondary education while
others do not
Afghanistan
Public education is a
relatively recent concept in
Afghanistan.
For this reason, theyre
lacking school, teachers,
supplies, etc.
It is not a priority for kids
to attend
Literacy rate is only 28.1%
Afghanistan is far behind Uganda
when it comes to primary
education. This is because schools
were oppressed by the Taliban
until recently so theyre just now
catching up
Gender Equality
Afghanistan
Only 12% or women can
read and write.
For cultural reasons, its
harder for them to keep
and hold jobs. Only about
47% work outside the
house
87% or women have
experienced some form of
harassment
Uganda
Women suffer from low
social status, discrimination,
and lack of economic self-
sufficiency.
Women are obliged to trade
for sex at a very young age,
causing a greater risk of
HIV/AIDS
FSD and other programs are
training women to have job
skills to help them out of
their situation
Both countries really struggle with gender equality. Its
causing other problems like STDs and poorer families
because mothers cannot help support. Education women could
really help both countries.
Reduce Child Mortality
Afghanistan
In the past years, the child
mortality rate has
improved by 60%
In 2012, their CMR was 100
for every 1,000
More children are getting
their immunization shots
and more mothers are
having children in facilities
Uganda
Uganda had the highest
death rate among children
in East Africa with 131
deaths per 1,000
Causes are malaria,
pneumonia, HIV/AIDS,
and malnutrition

Afghanistan is improving because theyve
been rebuilding their medical situation
since the Taliban was overthrown. Uganda
should probable do the same. They need to
get vaccinated.
Maternal Health: Reduce the
Maternal Mortality Ratio by 75%
Uganda
* Maternal Mortality went
from 506 per 100,000 births in
1995 to 435 in 2006
* There is a general shortage of
midwifery tutors
o More are being trained
o The Uganda Nurses and
Midwives Council is
promoting this education
* Not on track to decline the
ratio by 75%
Afghanistan
* Began with 1,600 deaths
per 100,000 live births
* Declined to 327 which
achieves the goal
* Community Midwifery
Education programs and
others are being put in
place
Combat HIV/ AIDS, Malaria, and
other Diseases: Halt and Reverse the
Spread of Disease
Uganda
* HIV rates are increasing
by 7.3%
* Local government leaders
are coming up with plans
of action to fight HIV/Aids
in their communities and
awareness is being added
to the education system
* Not on track to
accomplish this goal
Afghanistan
* Goal was to lower the
number of people infected
by Malaria to 5
Only lowered to 36
* No exact data on
HIV/Aids but it has only
been found in 0.01% of
blood donors in 2012
compared to 0.13% in 2005
* On track as far as
HIV/Aids but not other
diseases like Malaria
Environmental Sustainability: Goal: Implement
programs and policies that would reverse the
loss of environmental resources, reduce
biodiversity loss and reduce amount of people
without safe drinking water and sanitation.
Uganda
* The government established
many policies and eventually
the National Environmental
Protection Agency was
established.
o Level of compliance with
these laws has been low
* This slows down the
accomplishment of this goal
Afghanistan
* The National Environmental
Protection Agency has been
trying to push for laws that
would help sustainable
development.
o 18 laws have been developed
o They are successful in this part
of the goal and will reach it
* 2% of the land was covered in
forests
Environmental Sustainability
Continued
Uganda
* The biodiversity loss was
calculated to be 10%-11% per
decade
o Amount of land covered by
forest declined from 25% in
1990 to 18% in 2006
* The percentage of
biodiversity loss has been
decreasing but not by much,
so I dont think they will reach
the goal they may have been
aiming for.
* Access to safe water
increased from 57% in 2000 to
68% in 2006
o On course to meet target of
89% access in 2015

Afghanistan
o Trees are being planted
o Slowly more land is being
covered in trees
o This goal is slowly being
achieved
* The amount of people
with access to safe water
and sanitation has slowly
increased but is far from
reaching the goal

Global Partnership for
Development
Uganda
* The ODA (Official Development
Assistance) has been reducing since
1990
o In 2014 it will be US $35 which is
lower than the Millennial Project
expected Uganda would need
* 38% increase in fixed telephone
lines
* 15 cellular subscribers per 100
people in 2011
* 10 internet users per 100 people
in 2011
* Well on their way to creating
more global partnerships
Afghanistan
* Can only fund 60% of its
operational budget
o Relies on aid
o 35-40% of aid has been said to
have been inappropriately spent
* National Priority Programs
and others are working to
ensure effectiveness in the use of
aid
* I think that Afghanistan is
slowly working toward
achieving this development goal
but they will not reach it by 2015
