The drift speed is small, and yet the signal is very fast. This is because when you talk on
the telephone, as soon as electrons on one end of the wire begin moving, their electric
fields affect adjacent electrons, which also begin moving. This effect propagates down
the wire at almost the speed of light, so current begins everywhere almost
