Number, operation, and quantitative reasoning. The student
adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides to solve problems and justify solutions. The student is expected to: model addition and subtraction in situations involving fractions with objects, pictures, words and numbers.
Objective: Students will be able to add and subtract fractions using objects, pictures, words, and numbers.
2. Big Understanding: You are going to use fractions nearly every day of your life so you will need to know how to identify the various forms in which they appear and be able to add and subtract them as you go about your daily activities. 3. Assessment Evidence: Given a set of like and unlike fractions the students will be able to do the following: Divide the fractions into four groups with an equal number of like and unlike fractions in each group Create a visual and tactile display, such as a poster, that illustrates the four (4) forms that fractions can take (objects, pictures, words and numbers) Provide accurate solutions to all the problems with proof of answer 4. Opening Hook: How many of you believe that you use fractions every day? Ill bet you use them more than you think and today we are going to learn how to add and subtract them in their various forms. But first we are going to sing a song about the basic rules for addition and subtracting fractions. Have kids form equal groups and put their own tune to the words. 5. Instructional Strategies / Activities Input: - Use colored paper plates which are cut into halves/thirds/fourths - review parts of the fraction and the rules for adding and subtracting fractions Modeling: - Teacher will demonstrate on white board as students use shapes to help students visualize fractions Guided Practice: (use projector w/ power point if available) - Review parts of a fraction (numerator and denominator) - Start with fourths and go over adding and subtracting - relate to items on fractions handout - Review like and unlike fractions by using examples on handout - Go over adding and subtracting halves, thirds, like fractions and unlike fractions using white board Independent Practice: - Give 10 practice problems and check for correct answers. Students must show answers and step by step work
6. Materials / Resources Fraction handout, fraction project (colored paper plates) from homework assignment, copy of fractions song, white board w/colored markers. Use projector if available. Encourage students (with parents permission) to check out the following interactive websites: www.math-play.com / www.ixl.com / www.internet4classrooms.com
7. Grouping Patterns Study/lab groups of three-five students and individual study 8. Ending Summary / Reflections Think about all the ways you use fractions each day and the form in which they are presented (object, picture, words and numbers). Remind students to bring in the web addresses for two websites, other than those provided above, that can be used to help with their fractions homework if they get stuck. Fraction Song "If adding or subtracting is your aim, The bottom most numbers must be the same! "To change the bottom you multiply or divide, you do the same to the top if you want to be precise, And last of all you must simplify, and thats the way to get it right!
