What is a Flamethrower/ Origin
- Brings forth fire by burning fuel
- The earliest flamethrower dates back to 5 B.C.
- In the early 1900s Germany developed the
flamethrower
Types
- Germany created two types a large one and a
small one both created by Richard Fiedler
- The small one was called Kleinflammenwerfer
- The larger one was called Grossflammenwerfer
- They both are different in the ways of their
effects



Kleinflammenwerfer
- Smaller model
- Designed for portable use
- Carried by a single man
- Used pressurized air and carbon dioxide or
nitrogen.
- The flame went forth 18 meters
Grossflammenwerfer
- Larger model
- Had to be handled by two men
- Also used pressurized air and carbon
dioxide or nitrogen
- The flame went forth 36 meters
- The flame sustained for forty seconds
- Expensive
How was it used?
- The flamethrower was considered easy to
use
- It required strength to hold the tanks of gas
- The smaller model required only one man
- The larger model required two men
- The flame went forth by the press of a
trigger
Fighting Techniques
-Used to clear out deep trench dug outs were
the enemies hide

-Flame throwers took the lead in order to
cause the most amount of casualties
Impact
- The Hooge attack was the first use of the
flame thrower in battle
- Led to an increase use of flamethrowers in
battle
- Those who handled flamethrowers had a
short life since the tanks were targets
Advantages
They were able to clear out the front line
of soldiers in front of trenches
Didnt require much skill to operate
Can be used on tanks
Deadly amount of damage
Disadvantages
Not effective in long-range
The cylinder carrying fuel may
unexpectedly explode and in general you
can burn yourself.
They were a more noticeable target
Only effective over the areas of no mans
land
Improvements

Today they can shoot at a range
over 100 meters (Napalm)

Germany launched an excess of about 650
