Algebra I 2014 - 2015

Introduction
This New York/Common Core Standards based course will assist students in developing the mathematical
concepts and problem solving methods necessary to become proficient in Algebra I.

Major Learner Outcomes
As a result of the course students will develop skills and processes to use a variety of techniques to
successfully solve problems. Students will learn to solve all types of linear equations in one variable, quadratic
functions with integral roots, absolute value, and exponential functions. Coordinate geometry will be integrated
into the course and connections between analytical and geometrical representations of systems of equations
will be presented. Measurement using appropriate units and conversion within a problem solving context will
be emphasized. Students will learn about data analysis and measures of central tendency, correlation, and
causation.

Students will be able to:
Develop a thorough understanding of numbers, measurement, Algebra, coordinate geometry,
probability, and data analysis.
Demonstrate a variety of skills at solving problems using algebra, probability, coordinate geometry, and
data analysis techniques.
Engage in problem solving of real-world problems and learn to interpret and plan strategies to solve
mathematical problems.
Students will improve their ability to write about mathematical ideas through notebook entries, projects,
posters, and group work. Each student will express, argue, and defend ideas through writing and
discussions using critical mathematical thinking.
Improve ability to solve PSAT and SAT type questions as well as prepare for Regents Exam questions.
Mastery of mathematical problem solving is important for college readiness.

How to get there? Perseverance, Communication, Precision
Prompt come to class on time, quickly begin the do now
Prepared come to class with: Math notebook, folder, a pen, and a pencil
Professional Follow correct KAPPA uniform, listen attentively, and speak at the correct volume using
only respectful and tolerant language
Participate Be ready to respond whenever called on, to contribute to classroom discussions, and
volunteer to assist in classroom duties or activities
Respect yourself and your classmates:
o Listen closely to the opinions or ideas of your peers
o Ask questions when you are having trouble or want clarification
o Think youve got a concept down? See how well you can explain it and teach your peers!

Materials
A folder for any handouts or homework assignments
A pen and pencil

Classroom Procedures and Policies
Entering the Room
Enter the classroom before the end of the second bell. Pick up any guided notes or Do Now papers. You must
have your notebook or binder* and a pen or pencil on your desk.

*You may store your notebook/binder in the classroom, but you are responsible for making sure you have it out
at the beginning of every class.

Absences
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to do the make up work. Come by Professor Frenchs class either at
lunch or after school if you have questions or contact her via email, but do not address the issue in class.
Daily work / powerpoint / assignments can also be accessed at www.professorfrench.com

Late Assignments
Each day an assignment is turned in past the due date, your grade will go down.
Write Late on the assignment and number of days:
Number of Days

Highest Possible
Grade
1 3.5
2 3
3 2.75
4 2.5
5 2

Homework
Homework is an opportunity help advance your mastery of the standards in order to prepare you for the
quizzes which will then qualify for the tests. All homework will be graded and the lateness policy applies.

Test & Quizzes Policy:
In order to qualify to take the test, students must average a 75% mastery level of the standards as
demonstrated on the quizzes, class work, and homework.

Bathroom Policy
Only one student may leave the classroom at a time WITH permission from the teacher and a pass. Students
must sign out before leaving the classroom.

Consent with the Student Contract
I have read all of the updated information added to the Algebra syllabus. I know and understand the
expectations for this class and will do my best to ensure I relentlessly seek to grow and improve my levels of
standards mastery.
