A need in the mathematics classroom that was discussed between my cooperating
teacher and myself was the fact that mathematics should be linked to other content
areas such as literacy. The classroom that I am in is a mixed group of young
students. The morning class is classified as all ESE students and the afternoon
group is labeled ELL. The students are all at varying levels of learning. Even though
instruction is differentiated during small group instruction, it is the ability to read
and comprehend in word problems that stumps the students. As a pre service
teacher I have noticed that teachers are so focused on meeting their curricular goals,
that the students are getting left behind and not meeting the standards they need to
succeed.
It is important for all students to be able to understand what they are reading so
they could succeed in a content area such as mathematics. When I have my own
classroom, I want to try to find that balance and find that connection between
literacy and math, and empower my students to do the same.
