the world.
The emergence of reggae music in the late 1960s led to the rapid growth
of the Rastafari movement in the West Indies, the USA and the UK. Rastafarians
have a strong oppression towards racism, injustice and the exploitation of the p
oor and the underprivileged. Reggae helped spread the philosophy behind Rastafa
rianism to a wider Jamaican audience and the world. During that time, Bob Marley
and the Wailers were the catalyst in the popularization of Reggae music. Before
Marleys death in 1981, Bob Marley and the Wailers had released several albums th
at spread a message of liberation which had the power to transform a world of inj
ustice and war into one of peace and love. Marleys music was such a powerful forc
e in the rise of the Rastafari movement that it spread to almost every country i
n the world today. An analysis of his music provides an explanation to his succe
ss as it calls for changes in our society. Marley utilized religious metaphors
in his music that provided strategies for action and offered a solution for peopl
es problems. His music connected with his audience and due to the ambiguous nature
of his metaphors and his songs are used even today as protest music.
