Blog Post #4

The authors main argument surrounds the idea that technology is growing
rapidly and that we live in a time of ever changing technology but that students who
come from income areas care not exposed to the same technologies as those in
middle and upper class families. The author argues some explicit and implicit
reasons why a childs economic position affects their education. The author talks
about the obvious such as people with more money being able to buy more books
and supply more tangible resources for their children. He also mentions how
schools in low-income areas do not have as much technology usage in the class as
schools in areas of wealth. There is research in the article that says that the parents
of middle class students spend $8,000 more dollars a year on educational
enrichment than the parents of low-income students.
It informs my 20% project by confirming some of my suspicions by backing
up my theories with more concrete evidence. It informs about the gap between low-
income and upper income students when it comes to educational spending by the
parents and educational spending by the schools. This article also informs my
project by exploring and explaining how difficult it will be to reverse the gap
between these classes. It is imperative according to the article to start bridging the
gap now because if it is not bridged, then it will only increase and it will be harder
and harder to piece it back together. It inform the idea that education should not
only be afforded to those with money but that there needs to be a solution for those
with lower economic means.
My opinion about the article is that it gives a pretty good look into how
important it is to address my 20% project topic. The article really did a great job in
going into details about the differences experienced educationally by children at
different income levels. Over the last 20 years, it has come to be almost universally
accepted that schools should be judged by their effectiveness in educating all
studentsan important step forward for disadvantaged children. This statement
speaks volumes to me because it single handedly highlights the problem with the
income gap when it comes to technology. A student should not be educationally
labeled by their school effectiveness if they are not exposed to the same
technologies as other students. A student should have the same exposure to
technology that will allow them to be a better and more well-rounded student.
