KLA Integration
This integrated Science and Technology unit facilitates and provides Stage 1 children an opportunity to further
develop their knowledge, understanding, awareness and appreciation of living things (Charlesworth & Lind,
2010). Combined within this Science and Technology unit are the following KLAs: Mathematics; Human Society
and Its Environment (HSIE); and English.
Through hands-on investigations and experimentations, children will be furthering their mathematical skills and
ability to measure, classify, observe, sort, graph and record scientific data , that has been obtained within this
unit (BOS, 2012; Guha, 2012).Exploring and discussing the life cycle of humans (people), not only provides
children with opportunities to relate and contribute their own personal experiences to the educational
environment, but allows for clear scientific understanding to be identified and evident in their own lives and the
lives within their local community (BOS, 2012).
This unit provides Stage 1 children with the opportunity to further support; extend and enhance their literacy skills
in speaking and listening (BOS, 2012). This is achieved by allowing children to present their particular animals
life cycle to the class, and those who are not presenting, but listening, will be learning about other animal life
cycles, that they havent explored and therefore may ask questions to further their scientific knowledge and
inquiry (BOS, 2012).
By incorporating these various KLAs not only supports childrens ability to engage in a hands-on learning
experiences, offering altered opportunities to engage in science learning that is interactive, fun, relatable and
accessible to their daily lives, but advances learning skills across various KLAs (Guha, 2012; Skamp, 2012;
Charlesworth & Lind, 2010).
