Youth pleads not guilty to assault

KUCHING: A youth pleaded not guilty in the Magistrates Court here to an assault
charge and two theft charges he allegedly committed last week.
Accused Mohamad Syamsul Izwan Mohammad Suhaili appeared before
Magistrate Pradeep Singh who set May 14 and 15 for the trial date for the
assault case and May 16 for trial of the theft cases.
The pre-trial case management will be held on April 16 and 23.
For the first charge, Syamsul, 23, allegedly inflicted injuries on another person by
stabbing Roslidi Zainails abdomen with a penknife in front of Tun Jugah
shopping mall at about 2pm on March 17.
Assault comes under Section 324 of the Penal Code which provides a maximum
three years imprisonment with or without fine, or with whipping or any both
upon conviction.
For the second and third charges, he was accused to have stolen two handphones
belong to two persons at the same day and place at about 4pm.
Theft comes under Section 379 of the Penal Code which provides an
imprisonment term which may extend to seven years, with or without fine, and
for a second or subsequent offense shall be punished with imprisonment and
shall also be liable to fine or whipping.
In an unrelated case, a safety guard was fined RM1,000 in default two months
imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to consuming amphetamine and
methamphetamine last year.
Redza Ashmiruddin Roslan, 23, was convicted under Section 15(1)(a) of the
Dangerous Drugs Act 1953.
He admitted to have consumed the dangerous drugs at his house in Semariang
Batu at about 10.15am on July 6 last year.
The court also ordered him to be placed under two years supervision.
He settled the fine.
