Multiculturalism: An essential mixture of cultures to improve society

Multiculturalism" is the coexistence of diverse cultures, where culture includes racial, religious, or
cultural groups and is manifested in customary behaviors, cultural assumptions and values,
patterns of thinking, and communicative styles. Around this definition of the concept of
multiculturalism, we are going to develop our argumentative essay. There are societies which
perceive multiculturalism as an opportunity to join cultures in order to create a better society, for
example as a way to reach a point enrichment and improvement of the cultures, because of the
convergence of the two, and also as a chance to provide asylum, for people who is seeking it,
because of different issues such as persecutions for political and religious beliefs among others.
Even though there is a lot of controversy around the idea of multiculturalism. There are countries
in which it is a cultural reality to include, respect and invite new societies to join in order to create
an enrichment of the culture. We must point out Canada`s situation for example, in which the
slogan is "Diversity with unity". Encouraging other cultures to bring their own to the country.
Teaching and learning from each other, and being enriched by the ethnic, cultural, and language
diversity among its citizens and within their society. Now, if we consider this related to the
formation of values, we must said that this process of embracement of an external culture, expose
the countries citizen to values such as respect of other`s dignity, cooperation among the different
cultures, cordiality and empathy just to name a few.
Moreover, there are countries in which the national believe is that multiculturalism is something
to be proud of, because it is a chance to provide asylum to the people who is being forced to leave
their countries. As it is know people can seek for asylum because of different reasons such as
suffered (or feared) persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, political opinion, for
being a member of a persecuted social category of persons, or because of war and all that this can
involve. It is part of human's nature to help and protect others. Having this in consideration we
must said that multiculturalism involves quite more than a mixture of cultures, but the chance to
save lives, and protect others.
To sum up, with, there is still a percentage of people that see multiculturalism as a threat. That
might infringe upon their own identity as a country, and because of this organized strikes, social
movements and even violent demonstrations, just because they are against to the unification of
others communities to their own, multiculturalism is an useful tool for countries to coexist
together and to improve society through the blending of both communities, taking the best of
them.
