What does a WEB leader do?

What is WEB?
WEB stand for Where Everybody Belongs. WEB is
a student mentorship program that teaches 8th grade
students to be peer leaders and helps our 6 th grade
students with orientation and transition to Middle
School.

How do you become a

WEB leader?
Students have to complete a written application in the
spring of their 7th grade year, as well as give a 60
second speech about why they would be a good WEB
leader.
WEB leaders are chosen based on the quality of their
applications, teacher recommendation and effort in
the classroom. WEB leaders represent a wide variety
of backgrounds and are as diverse as the students who
attend Black Hawk.
Each year, many of Black Hawks dynamic 7th graders
apply to become WEB leaders. Unfortunately we
cannot take everyone. Approximately 80-85 students
are typically called into action to help the 6th grade
class. If this sounds like something you would be
interested in, please dont hesitate to apply when
applications are handed out in the spring by your
classroom teachers.

Students who are chosen as WEB leaders come into

BHMS during August before their 8th grade year for
training. WEB leaders commit to two, four hour
training days where they are trained to lead activities
for the 6th grade students.
Then the big day comes when WEB leaders help 6 th
graders through the orientation process before the first
day of school which includes games, activities and
getting to know Black Hawks newest class. Groups of
two or three WEB leaders are assigned to a group of
eight or nine 6th grade students that they will meet
with on a monthly basis throughout the school year.
Once a month, WEB leaders will meet with their 6 th
grade groups and lead them through fun activities
designed to teach them the skills to navigate Middle
School. WEB leaders are also given the opportunity to
tutor 6th grade students in a one on one setting during
FLEX time.

6th grade students at BHMS are benefitted in so many

ways by the WEB program. This group of students
goes through a very unique orientation process that
introduces them to new friends, acclimates them to
their new school, and helps them to build
relationships with 8th grade mentors.
These relationships continue to build with monthly
activities throughout the school year. BHMS 6 th
graders feel a strong connection to their 8th grade
leaders and to their 6th grade peers whom they share a
WEB group with.
Many 6th grade students take advantage of the WEB
tutoring program. This program allows 6 th graders to
receive one on one tutoring from some of Black
Hawks brightest and hardest working 8 th grade
students. WEB leaders dont just teach the skills and
knowledge to be a successful student, they model what
it means to be an active learner.
Students in the WEB program connect and build
relationships.

What are the benefits of being a

WEB leader?
WEB is a unique mentorship opportunity that
teachers our 8th grade students how to be leaders in
their community and school. The WEB tutoring
program allows students to develop teaching skills
and makes a huge difference in the learning of BHMS
6th grade students.
WEB leaders are the leaders of Black Hawk Middle
School and they have a lot of fun doing it.
