Comprehension Skill: Cause and Effect
-Authors of informational text sometimes organize their ideas by
describing cause-and-effect relationships. This is a text structure
to organize ideas and who why or how something happened. -To identify cause and effects, look at events that make something happen (cause). -Pay attention to what happens as a result of it (effect). - Signal words include: because, so, due to, and as a result. -For extra practice, refer to Practice Workbook pages 133-135. Vocabulary Strategy: Paragraph Clues
-When you are unsure of the meaning of a word in an informational text, you can use clues in nearby sentences to verify the meaning. - If you do not have enough information, use general information about a topic. Combine this with the paragraph clues to figure out the meaning. -You can double check with a dictionary or online. -For extra practice, refer to Practice Workbook page 137.
