DEFINING CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT THEORY

From the theories of Glasser, Coopersmith, Maslow,
and Dreikurs, it is evident that students require the
attention of the teacher. A teacher must truly
understand his/her students in order to meet their
needs. Particularly from Glassers research, we
know that students must feel loved, have fun,
survive, and feel free enough to make decisions. As
a teacher, I plan to meet these needs. In my
classroom management plan, I provide my personal
methods of meeting these needs.

Retrieved from: Jones, V. and Jones, L. (2013). Comprehensive classroom management. New Jersey: Pearson.

MY MISSION AS A TEACHER
As a teacher, I will follow all guidelines and regulations
set in place by the administration. I plan to
correspond with all teachers, staff, administrators,
and parents so that I create an environment that is
productive and functional for both the school and
children in my class.
As a mentor, I plan to meet the needs of my students to
the best of my abilities. I hope to nurture these
students so that they are able to learn in an open and
safe environment. I want to encourage exploration
and engagement so the students strive for excellence
and lifelong learning.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

Introductions
Documents
Timeline

INTRODUCTIONS
When students arrive on the first day of class, they will
all receive a nametag. The students are instructed to
sit in a circle on the floor. When all students arrive, I
will begin by introducing myself. The students will be
asked to say their name and something fun they did
over the summer.
Throughout this day, students will be introduced to the
classroom procedures and student expectations. The
students will be asked to practice some of these
procedures to ensure they understand the
expectations within the classroom.

DOCUMENTS
On the first day of school, students will be provided
with documents for them to fill out to describe what
they are interested in.
Other documents will be handed out on this day to be
sent home. The parents/guardians will be asked to
fill out background information on the student. It will
be stressed that this information will be strictly
confidential and kept for the teachers records. See
Document Details for more information

BACKGROUND DOCUMENT DETAILS

The background document that will be sent to the
parents/guardians requests for information about
the student such as:

Any Allergies
Cultural Background
Who the Child Lives With
Emergency Contact Information
Medical History (In relevance to how it may impact
students performance in classroom)

This information will be kept completely confidential and

will only be used for the teachers records.

TIMELINE
Throughout the school year, I plan to post a timeline
around the classroom. This timeline will include
important events in history, as well as
accomplishments throughout the students lives and
academic year.
I plan for this timeline to help build on the students
understanding of time and comparing lengths of
time to events in history or current events.

EVENTS
Holidays
Birthdays

HOLIDAYS
Holidays will be celebrated on designated days.
Students will be asked to bring in items for these
celebrations. To respect diversity, the class will
celebrate various holidays throughout the year.

Letters will be sent home to the parents in advance.

The parents are allowed to discuss their concerns
for any holiday celebration. However, the letter will
elaborate on the importance of celebrating different
holidays so that the students can become more
aware of each others cultures and develop
personal relationships.

BIRTHDAYS
On the first day of school, each student will be allowed
to decorate a name card. This name card will require
the students to write down their birthday. These cards
will be posted on the bulletin board.
On a students birthday, parents will be allowed to send
in cupcakes or other desserts to celebrate. A small
party will be held for these students near the end of
the school day. See Allergen Concerns
See Students with Summer or Holiday Birthdays

ALLERGEN CONCERNS
When parents/guardians send in the background
information on their child, they are asked to list any
allergens a student may have. If any student has an
allergy to a food, then it will not be permitted within
the classroom. This is to avoid risk of the child
coming in contact with the allergen.

STUDENTS WITH SUMMER OR HOLIDAY

BIRTHDAYS
Students that have birthdays in the summer on during
a long holiday will not be left out! These students
will have celebrations on designated days
throughout the year. These celebrations may either
be six months apart from their birthday, or the
closest days near their birthday. These celebrations
will be called the students un-birthday party.

PEER RELATIONSHIPS
Building Relationships
Relationship Expectations

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS
Students will be encouraged to collaboratively work
together on many assignments. Students are
encouraged to build relationships with one another
so that they can learn to understand and respect
one another.
Several grouping activities may be done throughout
the year to build on the students personal
relationships.

RELATIONSHIP EXPECTATIONS
Students are expected to be respectful of one
another. Students are encouraged to work together
cooperatively. If any child has concerns about
another student, they are encouraged to speak to
me in order to settle out any problems.
Students are not to tease each other, and they are to
respect each others differences. They are to treat
each other as members of one community, for this
is a main goal within the classrooms establishment.

UNDERSTANDING THE STUDENTS

Interviews
Interest Inventories

INTERVIEWS
Students will be interviewed periodically throughout the
year. This interview will involve questions that
encourage the students to discuss any thoughts or
concerns that they have. These concerns may
include things going on during instruction, my
teaching style, their seating arrangements, or
personal concerns.
The students will not be forced to elaborate on any
issues they are not comfortable with discussing. They
will be informed that all things said in the meeting are
kept confidential.
See Sample Interview Questions

SAMPLE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

How are you feeling today?
What is your favorite thing to do in my class?
What is your least favorite thing to do?
What is your favorite subject to study?
What is something you think would be really cool for
the class to do?
Are you getting along well with the other students?
Are you comfortable in this class?
Is there anything I can do differently in order to make
you more comfortable to learn and explore?

INTEREST INVENTORIES
Interest inventories will be taken periodically
throughout the school year. These inventories will
ask students leading questions about their hobbies
and interests. These inventories will provide
information on topics that can engage the students
in what is being studied in the content areas.
All information from the interest inventories will be
kept confidential and utilized for lesson planning
purposes.

RELATIONSHIP EXPECTATIONS
Students are expected to be both respectful and
courteous to their teacher. These children will know
that I care for them, and I am cheering them on for
success every step of the way.

Students are to be kind and understand that I am

their mentor. This should be evident with the
undivided attention they give me during instruction
and the amount of dedication they put into their
assignments.

MEETING NEEDS OF STUDENTS

General Accommodations
Special Needs
Gifted Students

GENERAL ACCOMMODATIONS
I am determined to meet the needs of my students to
the best of my abilities. If any student requires any
sort of accommodations, I will do everything in my
power to see that those accommodations are met.

It is very important to me in order to make the

learning environment as accessible as possible for
my students. Meeting the needs of my students is
one crucial part of making that environment openly
available to them.

SPECIAL NEEDS
Students with special needs require an immense
amount of guidance and instruction. As a teacher, I
plan to reach out to these students and find ways to
keep them engaged while maintaining order with all
other students. For these children, I will spend time
getting to know their disabilities and how it affects
them.
Once I have developed a relationship with these
students, I will find ways to provide instruction that
help them understand the content that they are
required to know.

GIFTED STUDENTS
I have observed that gifted students struggle with
remaining engaged throughout activities. This is
mainly because these students are not provided
with the challenges they need in order to maintain
stimulation.
To meet the needs of these students, I will provide
more challenging activities that will keep them
engaged throughout each lesson. This may be
providing them with additional steps to complete in
a problem, or they may simply be provided with a
more advanced level activity.

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
Gaining Students Attention
Music
Drama Usage
Encouragement

GETTING STUDENTS ATTENTION

In order to get the students attention at any point while
in my classroom, I will either ring a bell or play a tune
on the xylophone. This will be a calm way to get the
students to focus on what I am doing at that time.
Students will be able to practice recognizing this tune
from the first day of class.
If students do not immediately stop to pay attention
after hearing this tone, I will begin thanking the
individual students that have adhered to the
classroom expectations. This will, in turn, get the
attention of the students who had previous not been
aware of the call to order.

MUSIC
Through music, students can become engaged in
many lessons. As a teacher, I plan to start off
several lessons with songs appropriate to the
content area being studied. These songs will
include lyrics to help the students remember things
about what they are studying.
Songs will be reviewed throughout the units to make
sure the students are remembering the content and
are able to apply the concepts they have learned.

DRAMA USAGE
Drama will be utilized in the classroom quite often.
Through drama, students are able to connect to
what they are learning.
For many lessons, I will provide students with the
option to act out what they have learned. This will
provide an authentic assessment for me to check
for comprehension, as well as provide a way for indepth understanding of the content area subjects.

ENCOURAGEMENT
Students will be encouraged to do their best at all
times. I believe that students should be motivated
to follow their hearts and make the decisions that
they believe will be the best for their endeavors.

While students may struggle through various

subjects, I will do what I can to reach out to each
student to find some way to help them gain
confidence and become engaged in any subject.

CLASSROOM ESTABLISHMENT
Classroom Atmosphere
Seating Arrangements
Bulletin Boards
Student Jobs
Classroom Materials
Classroom Pets

CLASSROOM ATMOSPHERE
My classroom will be an open and welcoming place for
students to grow and learn. I plan to establish this
classroom so that the students feel safe and
comfortable to speak and share their knowledge with
their peers and teacher.
My classroom will be seen as a close-knit community.
The students will be encouraged to work together
and make decisions as a whole.
I want to make learning a positive experience for all of
my students, and I plan to create that atmosphere in
my classroom.

SEATING ARRANGEMENTS
Students will be provided with assigned seats for only
the first few weeks of class. This is set in place so
that I will be able to get to know each student and
how they each interact with one another.
After these few weeks, students are allowed to sit
where it is most comfortable for them. This includes
any grouping tables or sitting on the floor in the front
of the classroom. Students will be informed that they
are expected to be attentive and productive wherever
they choose to sit. If they do not meet these
expectations, I will ask them to move to a designated
area of my choice.

BULLETIN BOARDS
Bulletin boards will be decorated periodically
throughout the school year. These decorations will
pertain to the main theme the class is studying at
that particular time. The elements of the board will
change so that the students have a reference to
focus on throughout the year to help them
remember things they are studying.
However, one section of the bulletin board will stay
the same throughout the year. This section will
include a monthly calendar, a weather chart, and a
display of each students birthday.

STUDENT JOBS
There are three main jobs for students in my classroom. These
jobs are:
Line Leader
Bathroom Monitor
Meteorologist/Calendar Keeper

The line leader is a job that is rotated on a daily basis. This student will
be in charge of lead his or her classmates to their destinations in an
orderly manner.
The bathroom monitor is a job that is rotated on a weekly basis. These
two students (one boy and one girl) will be responsible for keeping an
eye on their peers behavior while in the restroom.
The meteorologist/calendar keeper is another job that is rotated on a
daily basis. This student will be in charge of keeping track of the
weather and changing the calendar days so that the students stay up
to date on the status of the weather and upcoming events.

CLASSROOM MATERIALS
For my class, I will request parents/guardians to
come in with certain supplies for the students of the
class. These items may include, but are not limited
to: tissues, hand sanitizer, pencils, notebook paper,
folders, treasure box items, and any supplies that
can be added to the first aid kit.
I will also supply some of these materials, but I ask
that parents/guardians will help contribute to this.

CLASSROOM PETS
My classroom will not have live pets. This is out of
concern for allergens and responsibility required for
taking care of the pet.
Instead, I will provide the class with the opportunity to
adopt a stuffed animal. The species of animal will be
decided on by the class (I will provide options for the
students to choose from), and the students will be
allowed to vote on the name for the class pet.

The class pet will be involved in different activities so

the students have an opportunity to teach what they
know to the classroom pet.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES
General Rules
Morning Routine
Instructional Time Routine
Hall Passes
End of Day Routine

GENERAL RULES
The following classroom rules will be posted on the
wall in my room. Students will be reminded of these
rules regularly.
1. Be respectful to others.
2. Wait your turn to speak. Raise your hand, and
patiently wait to be called on.
3. Do not leave your seat unless given permission or
for an emergency.
4. Please keep your hands, feet, and objects to
yourself.
5. Maintain a positive attitude!

MORNING ROUTINE
When students arrive in the classroom, they are to place
their backpacks in the designated area (near their
cubbyhole, if applicable).
Students will be provided with an opportunity to get up and
sharpen their pencils while they are settling down.
Students will then be directed to sit in their seats and get
out their agendas and journals. Students will write down
any homework assignments that are posted on the board.
In their journals, students will be asked to write a journal
entry based on something they have experienced recently
or write about a topic I have posted on the board for them
to write about. After about fifteen minutes, I will ask the
students to share anything they have written or drawn in
their journals.

INSTRUCTIONAL TIME ROUTINE

During instructional time, students are expected to be
attentive and actively participate in the lesson. When
students are released to do independent work, they are to
work quietly and efficiently. When students have finished
their work, they are asked to read a book or find an
activity relevant to the current content area to practice on
their own.
To gain my attention:
Students may raise their hands, and I will come to them. If I
am busy with another student, then they are to wait until I
am finished working with that student.

HALL PASSES
Hall passes will be provided for students who need to
go to the library, use the restroom, or run an errand
while they are in the classroom. Only two hall passes
will be available to students.

No more than two students can be out of the classroom

at one time, unless there are situational exceptions
needed.
Students are not permitted to leave the class during
instructional time. They may only leave when given
permission and have shown proof that they have
been productive on their current assignment.

END OF DAY ROUTINE

For the last five minutes of class, students are
instructed to retrieve their backpacks and place their
homework and agendas in their bags to get ready to
leave for the day.

Students will be instructed to line up according to the

schools schedule of which students are to leave first.
I will not leave the classroom until all students have
left the school.
While students are waiting to be called, I will play
educational videos for them to leisurely watch.

See Student Pick-Up Considerations

STUDENT PICK-UP CONSIDERATIONS

If a parent or guardian is running late in picking up
their child, then I will wait with the student until the
designated individual arrives.
If this parent or guardian is over half an hour late, I
will retrieve contact information from my records to
call the parent/guardian to see if any emergency
has arisen.

For liability and ethics purposes, I will not drive any

students to their home. A parent or guardian must
pick their child up from the school.

HALLWAY PROCEDURES
Line Leaders
Hallway Expectations

LINE LEADERS
The line leader is a student job that is rotated on a
daily basis. This student will be in charge of starting
the classs line and being the example for the class
to follow.

Line leaders are expected to be ready to lead the

class down the hallway quietly and orderly.

HALLWAY EXPECTATIONS
Students are expected to be quiet and respectful
while in the hallway. They are to stay on one side of
the hallway and keep the line as orderly as
possible.

When encountering other classes in the hallway, the

students are to stay in a line and avoid blocking the
way for any other students, teachers,
administrators, or staff members.

BATHROOM PROCEDURES
Bathroom Expectation
Bathroom Monitors

BATHROOM EXPECTATIONS
Students are expected to enter the bathroom quietly.
There should only be three students in each
bathroom at one time. When one student is finished,
another student may enter. Students should be quiet
while in the bathroom. They should not play or loiter
while inside.
When the students finish using the restroom, they are
to wash their hands and quickly return back to the
line. Students may get water at the water fountain
before returning to the line.

When the last student exits the restroom, the class may
return to the room or the next scheduled destination.

BATHROOM MONITORS
Each week, one boy student and one girl student will
be chosen as the bathroom monitors. These
students will be in charge of checking the bathroom
and making sure all students are following the all
rules and procedures of the bathroom expectations.
Monitors that find students not adhering to these
guidelines are to report their findings to the teacher.

CAFETERIA PROCEDURES
Entering
Sitting
Exiting

ENTERING
Students are expected to enter the cafeteria quietly
and in an orderly line.
Students with lunchboxes are instructed to sit in the
classs designated area. Students who purchase a
school lunch must quietly stand in line and patiently
wait for their food to be handed to them.

SITTING
Students are to sit together as a class. I will sit near
the students in order to interact with them and
monitor their behavior.
Students are only permitted to leave their seats with
my permission. The students are encouraged to
quietly talk to one another.
Food is not to be thrown at eat other at any time.

EXITING
When it is time to leave lunch, students are expected
to clean up around the area they were sitting. The
students will pick up their lunch trays and trash
while walking towards the designated area to drop
off these items. When students have finished
depositing these items, the students are to quietly
line up at the door to exit the lunchroom.
If a mess is made during this time, students are
instructed to get a mop or broom from a staff
member so that they may clean up their mess.

MEDIA CENTER PROCEDURES

Checking Out/In Books
Expectations

CHECKING OUT/IN BOOKS

Students are to quietly check out/in books at the front
desk of the library. Students are expected to turn
books in on time.
If students have lost any books, they are responsible
for adhering to library policy on replacing or finding
the lost book.

EXPECTATIONS
Students are expected to be quiet in the library at all
times. Students may check out books while in the
library.
Students are expected to not waste time while looking
for books. Students should find a book they are
interested in and check it out accordingly. When
students have checked out their books, they may
return to class quickly and quietly.

BEHAVIOR GUIDELINES
Behavior Expectations
Good Behavior
Disruptive Behavior

BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS
As stated in the classroom rules, students are
expected to be respectful at all times. They are to
be kind and courteous to others. Students are to
stay on task and do their best in all they do.

They are to work together as a cohesive group and

encourage each other to explore and discover their
interests.
Students are expected to be responsible and
organized. They must make sure to complete tasks
that are provided to them in a timely manner.

GOOD BEHAVIOR
Student Points System
Class Points System
Rewards

STUDENT POINTS SYSTEM (POSITIVE)

If students are doing exceptionally well while adhering
to the classroom rules and expectations, they will
receive points. I will keep a record of these points
on a chart I have hidden on my desk, or I will have
it placed on an online website, such as Class Dojo,
that allows teachers to give students points for
good behavior.
When students earn points, they can periodically
utilize these points to earn rewards.

CLASS POINTS SYSTEM

If the entire class has followed all guidelines within
the classroom and have maintained positive
behavior, the students will be rewarded with class
points. These points can be added up for a reward
for the entire class.
The more points the students earn, the greater the
reward they may receive.

REWARDS
When students have gained enough individual points,
then they will have the opportunity to earn rewards.
These rewards may include: picking an item out of
the treasure chest, gift cards, or other small
rewards.
Class-wide rewards may include opportunities such
as: extra recess time, movie day, party, and other
larger rewards that all students may enjoy.
The number of points for each reward will be decided
at a later date after observing the effectiveness of
this system.

DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR
Student Points System
Penalties

STUDENT POINTS SYSTEM (NEGATIVE)

If students have been disruptive to the learning
environment, then they will begin to lose reward
points.
Students can only gain back lost points through
positive behavior.
If a student loses all his/her points and continue to
misbehave, then their points will begin to drop into
the negative range. Penalties increase with the
number of negative points.

PENALTIES
When students clip has been moved to the red part of the
color wheel, this student will not be allowed to participate
in any group activities. The student will be asked to stay in
their seat away from the group and work on their own.
If a student still does not follow classroom procedures, he
will lose any special privileges for the rest of the week. All
other disciplinary action (letter to parents, points lost) will
still be in place at this time.

If actions continue after this, the student will be asked to

stay after school for an hour. This time will be spent either
reorganizing the classroom or sitting in silence.
If conditions still do not improve, the administration will be
notified for further action.

DISCIPLINE PROCEDURE
General Procedures
Types of Offenses

Minor
Major
Bullying

GENERAL PROCEDURES
Students are provided with expectations of the school
system and classroom at the beginning of the
school year. I will remind the students regularly of
those expectations.

If any disruptive behavior occurs, I will generally use

a color wheel that determines the disciplinary action
level the student is at during that time. Students will
be introduced to this wheel and provided with the
meanings to the corresponding colors.
See Color Wheel

COLOR WHEEL
1st Offense: Warning

Start Point of Each Day

2nd Offense (-1 Student
Point)
3rd Offense (-3 Student
Points)

If a student continues action after they are on red, then I will remove their name, and
they will receive a note to go home to their parent/guardian.

TYPES OF OFFENSES
Minor
Major
Bullying

MINOR OFFENSES (OUT OF SEAT, NOT ON

TASK, TALKING OUT OF TURN, ETC.)
Students who commit minor offenses within the
classroom will only be given one warning per day.
After this one warning, the student will be asked to
move their clip to the next corresponding color (see
Color Wheel).
Students will be reminded to look back on the
classroom rules and expectations to know why they
are facing the consequences for their actions.
If actions continue, I will speak to the student privately
in order to see if anything is going on that causes
them to act out in this manner.

MAJOR OFFENSES (FIGHTING, CHEATING,

DAMAGE TO PROPERTY, ETC.)
Any offense that is deemed as a major violation of the
school and classroom rules will result in an
immediate referral to the front office. An
administrator will be notified of the situation, and
parents/guardians will be contacted to schedule a
meeting in regards to the offense. Consequences
for these actions will be decided with the discretion
of the administration and parents/guardians.

BULLYING
Bullying will NOT be tolerated in my classroom. Any
students that have been accused of bullying will
immediately be sent to an administrator.
If there is any question concerning the situation, I will
talk to all students involved privately to understand
what has taken place. If bullying has, in fact, taken
place, then the student will face the consequences
set in place by the administration. A meeting will
also be set up with the parent/guardian to discuss
the situation and the students actions.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
General Procedures
Fire
Tornado
Earthquake
Accidents
Threat

GENERAL PROCEDURES
For any emergency, I plan to be as prepared as
possible to work with my students. Students will
practice procedures periodically to ensure they are
aware of what they must do under any emergency
situation.
When any emergency occurs, I will be sure to have
an emergency bag that contains a roster that
includes all the students names. This bag will also
contain a first aid kit.
Students are expected to follow all instructions
provided by any teacher or administrator.

FIRE
Students will be instructed to quickly and quietly get into
a straight line. I will instruct the line leader to exit the
nearest door and continue to walk outside of the
building to the designated area set in place by the
school administration.
When students reach the designated area, students are
to turn around to face the building. I will then check the
roster located in the emergency bag to make sure
every student is present.
If a student is not present, then I will inform an
administrator and seek to find the missing student.
While away from my class, I will ask a nearby teacher
or administrator to monitor my students.

TORNADO
In the event of a tornado, students are instructed to
line up against the walls of the hallway. Students
are instructed to cover their heads and necks with
their arms. They will be asked to crouch down in a
squat position. Students will be kept away from all
windows and glass doors.
I will look through my emergency roster to ensure all
students are present.
When the storm passes, students will be instructed
when it is safe to stand back up and return to the
classroom.

EARTHQUAKE
In the event of an earthquake, students are instructed
to hide under any sturdy desks immediately. They
are to cover their heads and necks with their arms.
They will be instructed to not move while the
earthquake is occurring.
When all shaking has ended, students may slowly
move from their cover positions and assist the
teacher in rearranging the classroom.
The class will have a break to recover mentally from
the event.

ACCIDENTS
Bathroom Accident
If a student is to have an accident in the classroom, I will have
a set of towels for the student to use to clean
himself/herself. They will be instructed to go to the restroom
while their parents are called to bring a spare set of clothes.
I will call the front office and ask them to contact the
parents/guardians while I am tending to my students.
Injury Accident
I will provide a first aid kit in the event of a small accident. If a
student is badly injured, I will notify the nurse and provide
parent/guardian contact information so they can be informed
of the situation.

For both instances, I will provide documentation of what

occurred to have record of what happened in the event
there are any questions concerning the situations.

THREAT
Armed Gunman on Campus
When this warning is sent to the class, students will be
instructed to hide in a corner away from the door. The
classroom door will remain locked until an administrator
declares the situation is under control. As the teacher, I will
guard my students and instruct them to stay calm and quiet
in a group.
Bomb Threat
Once this warning has been announced, I will instruct the
students to calmly and quietly exit the building in a way
similar to responding to a fire. When students are in the
designated area, I will check my roster to make sure all
students are present and accounted for. Students will not be
permitted near or inside the building until the situation has
been inspected and cleared.

PARENT CONTACT PROCEDURES

Contact Letter
Maintaining Contact with Parents
Good Behavior
Discipline
Grades
Meetings
Visiting Parents
Parent Expectations

CONTACT LETTER
A parent/guardian contact letter will be sent home on
the first day of school. This letter will welcome the
parent/guardian to my class. This letter will provide
contact information so that they will have access to
my information so that they can reach me in times
of need.

See attached letter template.

MAINTAINING CONTACT WITH PARENTS

I will strive to keep regular contact with the
parents/guardians of each child.
I will send home weekly notes concerning their childs
progress. This will inform the families how the child
is doing in the class both socially and academically.
I will also send home weekly newsletters at the
beginning of each week to let the parents know
what is going on in both the class and the school for
that week while informing them of upcoming events.

GOOD BEHAVIOR
When students have had exceptionally good
behavior, a letter will go home to the
parents/guardians praising the student for their
actions. These actions may include: staying on
task, working hard, being respectful, or following
instructions.

DISCIPLINE
For any minor disciplinary issues, parents/guardians
will not be contacted. However, if these issues
occur regularly, then the parent may be notified of
this.

If any major disciplinary problems occur, the parents

will be contacted at the next available time frame
(during planning, after school, etc.).

GRADES
Every week, students will send grades home to their
parents/guardians. These grades must be signed
and brought back to school in order to indicate that
the parents are aware of their students progress.

I am only available by phone call, email, or letter to

discuss grades and performance before school,
during my planning period, and an hour after
school, with some situational exceptions. These
exceptions may only be allowed in the event a
parent or guardian is not available at any other
time.

MEETINGS
Parents are encouraged to meet with me regarding
their students progress and performance.
Parents may set up a meeting with me by email,
phone call, or letter. Meetings may only take place
before school, during planning, or within an hour
after school. No instructional time will be interrupted
to meet with a parent. Parents/guardians may meet
at other times after school if no other times are
available for them to meet.
I will take notes during all meetings to record what we
have discussed. At the end of each meeting, I will
ask the parent to sign and date to state that they
approve of the notes taken for this meeting.

VISITING PARENTS
Parents/guardians are encouraged to visit the classroom at
any time to monitor what I am teaching and how their
child is learning in the classroom.
Visitors are not allowed to interact with students. They are
to sit in the back of the classroom in the designated
areas to prevent interrupting the flow of the classroom.
If the parent/guardian wishes to speak with me regarding
their visit, they must wait to be addressed until the
students are independently working. All conversation at
this time will be brief. Any at-length discussion must be
made during an scheduled meeting.

PARENT EXPECTATIONS
Parents/guardians are asked and expected to be
supportive of their children while they are pursuing
their educational endeavors. They are requested to
look after and care for these students, while helping
them through any homework assignments that they
can.
However, the parents/guardians are advised NOT to
complete all the work for their children. I request to
see the childs work, and the finished product of
their work should be solely theirs.

OTHER POLICIES/PROCEDURES
Technology Usage
Media Release Forms

TECHNOLOGY USAGE
Students will be encouraged to use technology often. Many
lessons will require the students to utilize technology in
some way.
Students will be instructed at the beginning of the year how to
properly use this technology so that the privilege remains
available throughout the year.
If any student abuses this privilege the student will receive
1st Offense: A warning
2nd Offense: A technology task out of the Techno Box
(See Details)
3rd Offense: Student loses technology privileges for a week.

TECHNO BOX
The Techno Box is a container that includes various
activities that require students to use their
technological device to research something that
they must present to the class. This activity is not
intended as punishment, for it is utilized to redirect
the student in showing them the purpose for
utilizing technology in the classroom.
Examples for activities may include: looking up
definitions for content specific material, answering
questions from the class that need further
clarification, etc.

MEDIA RELEASE FORMS

At the beginning of each year, I will include a media
release form with the documents I send to the
parents. This document will require the parents to
sign and state that their child can have their
pictures taken. These photos may potentially be
placed on the classs website or put in a local
newspaper.

STUDENT ABSENCES
Policy on Absences
Make-Up Work

POLICY ON ABSENCES
My policy of absences will follow the policies set in
place by the school district.
If students miss any work done in class, they will
have the opportunity to make up the work during a
time that does not disrupt the flow of the classroom.
This means the activities will not be done during
instructional time.

MAKE-UP WORK
All make-up assignments will be kept in a folder that is
accessible for all students. The day a student returns to
school will be the day I provide the missed assignments,
unless a parents comes in to picked up any missed work
while the student is absent.
I will take time during my planning period, before class, and
after class as times available to help the student with any
questions they may have had concerning the missed
assignments.
Assessments can be made up during the above mentioned
times. I will not take time out of the instruction period to
provide these to the students. The only exception to this
rule would include times that the students has finished all
other work that needs to be completed.

SUBSTITUTES
Student Expectations
Leaving Plans

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS
If I plan to be absent, I will inform the students in
advance that I will not be there.
The students will be informed that they are expected to
follow the same classroom procedures that are in
place even when I am not present.
If students do not comply with expectations, the
substitute is instructed to leave the name of the
student, as well as the offense the child made.
Upon return from absence, those who misbehaved
while the substitute was present will be provided with
consequences that correspond with the normal
discipline procedures.

LEAVING PLANS
Substitutes will be left with detailed plans concerning
what the students are instructed to do on the days I
will be absent. These plans will include a schedule,
as well as a list of classroom expectations.

If any possible extenuating circumstances are likely to

occur while the substitute is present, I will provide any
forewarning that the substitute can expect while they
are watching over my class.

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL

Portfolios
Celebration!

PORTFOLIOS
On the last day of school, the students will be given a
portfolio. This portfolio will contain work that each
student has completed throughout the year. This
portfolio will allow the student to see how much he
or she has grown throughout the year.
This portfolio will also include a personal letter written
by me to inform each student the positive ways he
or she contributed to the class.

CELEBRATION!
At the end of the year, there will be a party to
celebrate the completion of a year. Students will be
provided with parting gifts.
Prior to the last day, I will send the students home
with a sign-up sheet for parents to fill out what they
can, if possible, bring for the celebration.
Students will be able to watch movies or relax
together to have a final day as a class.
