SRA for 10th Grade English

UNIT: The Catcher in the Rye 10th Grade
CLEAR PURPOSE:
For this summative assessment the students will be assessed as per their knowledge over the
class novel. They will also be assessed based on their knowledge of literary techniques and
devices and how they are used within the novel. The SRA will consist of matching, multiple
choice and true and false portions. The students will then complete a self-assessment at the
conclusion in order to track their learning and then communicate about that learning.
STANDARDS/BENCHMARKS:
1. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.2
Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course
of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an
objective summary of the text.
2. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.3
Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop
over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the
theme.
3. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.4
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative
and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning
and tone (e.g., how the language evokes a sense of time and place; how it sets a formal or

DIRECTIONS:
Today, we will be conducting an assessment to track your knowledge of the
literary techniques and devices we have discussed in class. Likewise, we will also
be assessing your knowledge of the plot and use of technique and devices within
The Catcher in the Rye. It is important to be able to notice and highlight the ways
in which J.D. Salinger uses the things weve talked about in class. This assessment
will consists of three portions, including matching, multiple choice and true and
false.

Once you have finished each question you will then be asked to answer as to
whether or not you are sure or not sure of the answer you gave. To do so please
bubble next to the corresponding bubble, like so:

SURE

Not Sure

When you are completely done with test, including the sure/not sure bubbles for
each question, make sure that you go back over your test in order review your
answers and make sure you have left nothing blank. Remember with tests such as
these it is better to guess than it is to leave something blank. When you have
completed the test and make sure to go forward and answer the self-assessment
questions at the very end of the test. Please take your time and give honest
answers. The self-assessment questions should be answered in complete sentences
and please take your time in answering them.

You will not be allowed to leave for bathroom, drink or any other breaks once the
test begins. There will be no talking and if you have a question please raise your
hand and I will come to you.
When you have finished both the self-assessment and the test please bring your
test up to me and then return to your test where you may either work on any
classroom work that needs completion or read. Please remain quiet once you have
completed the test and respect your fellow students who have not finished.
You will have the rest of the hour to complete the test, I know you will all do
great!
