A. PENDAHULUAN
Proses penghilangan logam berat atau bukan
logam berat seringkali menggunakan metode adsorpsi .
Metode ini efektif menghilangkan logam berat walau
hanya dilakukan dengan proses adsorpsi yang relatif
sederhana (Filho , dkk.,2007). Proses adsorpsi dapat
terjadi secara kimia ataupun fisika. Pada adsorpsi
fisika, adsorpsi disebabkan gaya van der waals yang
ada pada permukaan adsorben . Sedangkan pada
adsorpsi kimia, terjadi reaksi antara logam yang
diserap dengan adsorben (Sukardjo, 1985).
Penelitian-penelitian tentang studi adsorpsi
logam dengan menggunakan adsorben telah banyak
dilakukan. Memanfaatkan limbah hasil pertanian atau
perkebunan sebagai adsorben yang mengandung
selulosa untuk studi adsorpsi logam juga telah banyak
dilakukan akhir-akhir ini. Fatma, (2002) telah meneliti
sabut kelapa untuk penyerapan ion logam cadmium.
Abia dan Asuquo, (2007) meneliti serat buah kelapa
sawit sebagai adsorben ion logam Cd(II) dan Cr(III).
Igwe dan Abia, (2006) meneliti serat/sabut kelapa
sebagai adsorben in logam As(III). Igwe dan Abia,
(2007) meneliti batang jagung sebagai adsorben ion
logam Cd(II), Pb(II) dan Zn(II). Babarinde, dkk.,
(2008) meneliti pembungkus buah jagung sebagai
biosorben ion logam Zn(II)
Dari beberapa contoh hasil penelitian diatas,
ternyata adsorben limbah hasil pertanian atau
perkebunan tersebut mengandung selulosa. Pada
penelitian ini akan dipilih limbah hasil pertanian yaitu
jerami padi yang menurut Reddy dan Yang (2006)
dinyatakan bahwa komposisi jerami padi terdiri dari 40
% selulosa, 30 % hemiselulosa, 15 % silika dan 15 %
lignin.
