Key Ideas and Details

1. Now that you are this far into the story, what conflicts or problems do you think the characters will face?
What qualities of your character (honest, loyal, cruel, dishonest, angry, vengeful) will affect how the character
handles the problems and conflicts he or she encounters?
2. If you could change the setting in this story to another setting, what setting would you choose? Would you
change just the time period? Or would you change the place, the season, the actual environment-one of poverty,
riches, or middle class America? Why would you make those changes? How would the plot be different? How
would the conflict be different? How would the characters be different?
3. If you were to put this story into your own life, in the area where you live, around the people and friends that
you know, how would the story have to change? How would the people change? Would the setting have to
change? Why would these changes have to take place?
4. What is the theme of the section you just read? Do you agree with the theme? Why or why not? Is this
theme similar or different to themes presented earlier in the book? How does what you read today contribute to
the overall theme of the book? How does the theme apply to your own life or something else you have read?
Craft and Structure
5. What special way did the author write (for example, flashbacks, told in first person, foreshadowing,
descriptive words that create visual images in your mind, etc.)? Why did the author make that choice? In your
opinion, did that make reading it better or worse? Why?
6. Choose an important quote from this section. Who said it? Who is he or she speaking to? In your own
words, what does the quote mean? Why is it important to this section? Is there any strong diction? Do they
have positive or negative connotation? Does it convey a specific mood or tone? Use your word bank in your
permanent notes section.
7. Choose two characters that have different points of view. What do they believe? Who do you agree with?
Why does the author show both points of view? How does this add to the meaning of the story?
Reactions
8. What do you think about the main character in this section? How would you describe his or her
personality? (honest, loyal, cruel, dishonest, etc.)? Why? Do you agree with his or her actions? Why or why
not? After reading this section, do you think you would be friends? Why or why not?
9. Did the setting, characters or situations in your book remind you of your own life? How were they alike
and how were they different?
10. What are your reactions to what you read today? What surprised you? What confused you? Did you agree
with the main characters actions? Why or why not? How did the events make you feel? Use your word bank in
your permanent notes section.

11. If you could ask any character a question, what would you ask? If you could ask the author a question, what
might that be? Explain why you chose these questions.
