Tutorial 2 : Foundations of Communication

Activity : Analysing video clip
Your tutor will play a short video clip. This video clip is about a few ladies who are
residents of an old folks home communicating with each other. The video clip is in
Hokkien (a Chinese dialect). Follow the sub-titles at the bottom if you do not understand
the language. While watching the video clip, based on what you have learnt in Lecture 2;
try to answer the following questions, and your tutor will discuss them at the end:-

1. a) How many participants were involved in the communication around the table?

b) According to the levels of communication, what kind of communication is this?

2. What was the channel used in their communication?

3. What was the main topic of their message during the communication?

4. Analyse the contexts involved in their communication. Describe what you can
observe about the...
a) physical context

b) social context

c) psychological context

a) While the ladies were communicating with each other, what visual distraction
interrupted their communication?

b) Is it considered physical noise or psychological noise?

6.

In the scene when the son came to fetch his mother, describe what you can observe
of the cultural context of that family.

7.

a) What was the feedback given by the old lady when the other ladies waved to
her after she entered the car?

b) What kind of feedback do we consider that as?

8. Based on your personal opinion, what moral lessons can we learn from this video clip?
