Study Outline for TMJ Anatomy Lecture

Lecture # 1:
Prevalence of TMD
Anatomy of TMD: Type of Joint (TMD) and associated movements,
unique features, innervations, vascular supply, purpose/function of
disc, retrodiscal tissue, histology of TMJ, TMJ capsule, ligaments.
Disc position: normal, abnormal
Muscles of Mastication and their function
Remember: Digastric OPENS and Retrudes the mandible. (In the
original slideshow, it said it closes the jawthats wrong!!)
Lecture #2:
Normal range of opening, normal right and left lateral movements,
deviation, deflection, tongue blade bite test and manipulation
Evidence of parafunction, habits
Cervical assessment
Disc derangement disorders: disc displacement with and without
reduction
What causes popping and clicking noises? What should we do about it,
and when?
Deviation with disc displacement with reduction
Deflection with disc displacement without reduction
Treatment for disc displacement with reduction
Trigger points: Definition, type of pain they evoke, referred pain, active
vs. latent, where can they refer pain?
Which muscles refer pain to the TMJ and Ear?
Which refer pain to the teeth? (You dont need to know which teeth)

What causes muscle pains and toothaches?


Myofascial pain: diagnostic criteria, treatment, what type of tx should
we avoid?
Myositis: diagnostic criteria, with signs of inflammation
Myospasm: diagnostic criteria, treatment
Myalgia: characteristics, treatment
Fibromyalgia: characteristics, type of physician who deals with
fibromyalgia patients?
