Course Description
Gabby Class is designed to enhance students ability to speak in English automatically through
intensive question/answer practice. This is a teacher-lead class, using GVTs proprietary Gabby
software application. This course incorporates listening and speaking skills.
Students will answer a series of 10 yes/no questions in each lesson. Answers are timed and
scored for accuracy; these scores are tracked and charted to demonstrate improvement
throughout the course. There are 10 levels of difficulty, and questions are randomized,
encompassing a variety of real-world professional situations, vocabulary, and grammar
functions.
Course Goals
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
1. Understand the importance of thinking in English without translating in the brain first.
2. Through repeated practice, decrease the amount of time the student requires to answer
yes/no questions in English.
3. Increase accuracy and timing scores by at least 20% (weighted average) from the first day of
class.

4. Secondary benefits include pronunciation practice and new vocabulary/idiom usage.

Requirements
Students are expected to come to class alert and ready to listen and speak.
Punctuality and Attendance: Students presence, participation, and commitment to learning
are vital. Therefore it is essential that students arrive on time for each class meeting. Class will
not be rescheduled for absences without advance notice. GVT requires a 72-hour notice to
reschedule a class; without this, GVT will treat the class as completed and no refund will be
given for this session.
Participation: Students must be prepared for active engagement with the instructor -- ready to
speak aloud and answer questions. Instructors encourage grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary
and usage questions during the appropriate time during the class.
No Electronic Devices! When class is in session, all electronic devices must be TURNED OFF or
SILENT.

Teacher Instructions & Class Procedures

One-on-One Private Tutoring: 90 minutes
15 minutes Warm-Up. Teacher and student conduct general conversation, to get the
student accustomed to speaking in English. Teacher should ask general questions such
as, How was your weekend? Did you see any good movies? or focus on learning, such
as Do you have any questions about English usage since our last meeting? This is the
time for students to bring up anything they have encountered in their real lives in the US
that they have questions about.
60 minutes Gabby. For private tutoring only, start each lesson with Level 1. If its the
first time youve done a lesson at this level, do one practice round first with the timer
off; then do a timed lesson and record the scores. If a student receives a score of 9 or
higher, move on to the next level; otherwise, repeat the level until the score is 9 or
higher. Time is not a factor in moving on to the next level.
Read each question in the lesson. Students should respond with full sentences,
with both Yes and No answers. You may repeat the question if the student asks,
or if its clear they didnt quite understand. This is not the time to help students
with vocabulary or further grammar explanation -- focus only on reading the
questions.

Score the questions as perfect/almost perfect (smiley face), one or two mistakes
(middle face), or very hard to understand (frowny face). The score is one point
for a smiley face, half of a point for a middle face, and zero points for a frowny
face.
When all 10 questions have been read and answered, go over the list of
questions on the screen, so the student can read them and see their scores. Now
is the time to discuss vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, etc. -- whatever
questions the student has.
Repeat the level or move on to the next, depending on the students score.
Repeat the process until the student has mastered Level 10, or has completed
the class; whichever is sooner.
15 minutes Cool-Down. This time can be spent with more general conversation, or to go
over specifics of todays lesson (more vocabulary work, etc).
There is no homework for Gabby classes. In fact, preparing for the class is
counter-productive; the questions need to remain new and fresh and unpredictable, so
the variety keeps the students on their toes.
90-minute classes can be converted to 60-minute classes by abbreviating the
warm-up/cool down times, and the Gabby lesson time.

Class of 5 Students: 90 minutes

5 minutes Warm-Up. The pace of this class should be more swift than with a one-on-one
private session, to ensure the teacher can maximize time with each student. Start with
Level 1, or choose a lesson level that is at least two levels lower than the highest level
succeeded in the previous class. Ask questions randomly of students; ask the question,
then gesture to a student to respond -- this ensures all students listen to all questions,
because they are never sure when you will call on them. Students should respond with
full sentences, with both Yes and No answers. You may repeat the question if the
student asks, or if its clear they didnt quite understand. After every student has
answered at least three questions, begin with the practice round, in pairs.
70 minutes Gabby. Begin with a level that is two levels lower than the highest level
attempted (not necessarily succeeded) in the previous class. This will serve as further
review and practice.
Break students into two pairs, with one leftover student.
The pairs will practice asking/answering questions with the Gabby app on iPads,
with the timer off. (A .pdf of prepared questions may also be used.) Take turns,
and complete the level as many times as possible. Different questions should

come up each time. No scoring is necessary, as this is just practice.

The fifth student practices with the teacher, without scoring and with the timer
off. Its important to do this practice round with the fifth student quickly, since
the other students will get more practice.
After completing the questions once without the timer/scoring, turn the timer
on and do a live lesson with scoring (see above for smiley/frowny face scoring
descriptions). When all 10 questions have been read and answered, go over the
list of questions on the screen, so the student can read them and see their
scores. Now is the time to discuss vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, etc. -whatever questions the student has.
Switch to a new student and re-assign pairs, so everyone is working with
someone new. Have the pairs continue practicing at this level, while you test the
next student with the timer/scoring on. Do not do a practice round here, to save
time. Then review the answers and move to the next students.
After all five students have been timed/scored, begin the next level and repeat
the steps above, starting with the Warm-Up to introduce the next harder
questions.
15 minutes Cool-Down. This time can be spent focusing on the grammar and vocabulary
addressed in the class today, or with more general conversation.
There is no homework for Gabby classes. In fact, preparing for the class is
counter-productive; the questions need to remain new and fresh and unpredictable, so
the variety keeps the students on their toes.
90 minutes is strongly recommended for a class of 5 students.
