Kaylas Lesson to be Reviewed

Pre-Planning Tasks
Common Core State Standard (Written out in words):
7.NS.1. Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational
numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.
b. Understand p + q as the number located a distance |q| from p, in the positive or negative direction
depending on whether q is positive or negative. Show that a number and its opposite have a sum of 0 (are
additive inverses). Interpret sums of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.
Content Analysis (May include a task analysis, concept analysis, key terms and vocabulary, and a list of prerequisite skills or knowledge)
Pre-requisite skills
-Negative Numbers
- Adding and Subtracting positive and negative numbers
Key Words
- Absolute Value
- Negative
- opposite
Lesson Objective (Including condition, content, behavior, criterion):
Student will demonstrate their understanding of absolute value by answering 10-15 questions using absolute
value with 80% accuracy.
Critical Management Skills (Materials, use of space, arrangement of students):
- Absolute value note taking squares
- glue sticks
-note books
-review and absolute value powerpoint
Lesson Setup
Gaining Attention (How will you gain and maintain student attention?):
Start with the warm-up to review adding negative numbers. Students should participate by giving answers.
Communication of Behavioral Expectations (How will you communicate your expectations for student
behavior?):
Students will be asked to have their materials out and ready, like they are expected to do in the beginning of
every class. If students are being disruptive they will be asked the RTP questions and redirected back to the
lesson.
Lesson Opening
Lesson Introduction (State the objective and explain why it is important to learn, activate background
knowledge or hook students, pre-assessment, etc.):
Review number line and opposites ( a negative sign in front of a number is like saying the opposite of the
number

Lesson Body
Instructional Component (I DO numbered, step-by-step instruction, modeling, think alouds, examples and
non-examples, scaffolding, accommodations, etc.)
1. Absolute value is the distance a number is away from zero. If I have the number two, how far away is it
from zero?
2. If I had the number -6, how far away is it from zero? Can you have a negative distance? If you lived two
miles from school to the north, and I lived two miles from the school to the south, would you say I lived
negative two miles away? No, I would still just live two miles away. ABSOLUTE VALUE IS A DISTANCE.
3. Absolute value looks like | | If I put a number inside of the lines, it is asking me how far that number is
from zero.
4. When I have a problem that looks like | -2 | the answer is 2. Because -2 two is two spaces on my number line
away from zero (Show with number line)
Extended Practice
Guided Practice (WE DO activity, includes frequency and type of feedback, various instructional
groupings, additional modeling, re-teaching, etc.):
-Pass out Absolute Value Notes to paste in notebook. Go over each quadrant
Definition: Absolute value is the distance a number is from zero
It looks like: | | <- symbol for absolute value |x| unknown absolute value
Examples: | -7| = 7 |2| = 2 |-8| = 8
Non-examples: (-3), |-4| = -4 |3| = -3
As a class answer the problems at the bottom of the definition sheet
Independent Practice (Description of activity, when, where, and how it will be completed, connected to the
lesson objective, indicates the purpose of the activity):
Independent practice will be the students homework:
The homework will consist of absolute value problems as well as a review of add negative integers and
substitution.

Lesson Closing
Lesson Summary (Review of learning, student reflection, preparation or preview of next lesson, connection
between introduction and instructional component, clearly articulates the importance of learning the skill and
how it can be related to other learning or real world situations):
Review the Integers and Absolute Value PowerPoint and answer some facts in class. It is important to
remember that absolute value is a distance.

Evaluation
Assessment (Matches the lesson objective, reflects criteria of objective, accommodations considered, how data
will be collected, how assessment will be given, etc.):
Homework will be used as an assessment as well as the end of the unit quiz. During the lesson, students will be
asked to periodically thumbs up, side, or down to demonstrate their understanding of the concept.
