OPTIMIZATION PROBLEMS

1.) The strength of a rectangular beam is jointly proportional to its breadth and the square of its depth.
Find the dimensions of the strongest beam that can be cut from a log in the shape of a right - circular
cylinder of radius 72 cm.

2.) Suppose that c x = x3 K20 x2 C20, 000 x is the cost of manufacturing x items. Find a production
level that will minimize the average cost of making x items.

3.) In one leg of the "Amazing Race", teams are to race from A to B as
shown in the Figure. They are to row the 3 km. wide river and then the
teams can run from their landing pt. on the other side to reach B. If each
team can row 6 km. / hr. and run 10 km. / hr., to what place is it best to
row so as to minimize the time to reach B ? ( Neglect current speed )
4.) The manager of a 100 - unit apartment complex knows from experience
that all units will be occupied if the rent is $800 per month. A market
survey suggests that, on average, one additional unit will remain vacant
for each $10 increase in rent. What rent should the manager charge to
maximize revenue ?
5.) If two corridors at right angles to each other are 10 ft. and 15 ft. wide,
respectively, what is the length of the longest steel girder that can be
moved horizontally around the corner ? Neglect the horizontal width of
the girder.
6.) Find the area of the largest rectangle having two vertices on the
x Kaxis and two vertices on or above the x Kaxis and on the
parabola y = 9 Kx2

7.) If 1,200 cm2 of material is available to make a box with a square base
and an open top, find the largest possible volume of the box.

8.) A painting in an art gallery has height h and is hung so

that its lower edge is a distance d above the eye of an
observer. How far from the wall should the observer
stand to get the best view ? ( In other words, where
should the observer stand so as to maximize the angle
θ subtended at his eye by the painting ? ) FIGURE for number 8

9.) Let v1 be the velocity of light in air and v2 the

velocity of light in water. According to Fermat's
Principle, a ray of light will travel from a point A
in the air to a point B in the water by a path ACB
that minimizes the time taken. Show that
sin θ1 v1
=
sin θ2 v2

This is known as Snell's Law
