Summary:

This is not an article. Instead, this is a guide to Deferred

Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) on the Department
of Homeland Securitys website. Homeland Security
defines deferred action as the Discretionary
determination to defer removal action of an individual as
an act of prosecutorial discretion. Deferred Action began
when President Obama in the summer of 2012, issued an
executive order. Deferred action prevents any young illegal
immigrant who entered into the United States before a
certain date, cannot be eligible for deportation. Instead,
they get a drivers license and work permit. However, this
is only a temporary relief. Deferred action is not a pathway
to obtaining permanent residency such as a green card or
citizenship. Once President Obama leaves office, the
program may be overturned.

Why is this source important?

This source is important because it explains into great

depth, the composition and requirements for deferred
action. This page is meant to serve as a guide to any
individual who is seeking to obtain deferred action, on how
they can receive it and what that means. There are also
very specific questions under the section Frequently
Asked Questions, that explain what is and what is not
possible. This is an excellent guide to understanding the
process. Also, on Thursday, President Obama in his
speech, slightly altered deferred action by changing the
date of entry.

How will you use this source in your project?

I will use this source in my project by mentioning the

eligibility requirements and the results. This is extremely
important to my project but it is a foundation. Before
someone can get excited, they must know about the rules
and requirements and the effects and consequences.

Summary:

This book calls to mind the experiences of sixteen

undocumented students and what it means to be
considered American. Although many of these
students are just as American as or even more
American than us, and have lived in these country for
most of their lives, and have enriched our society,
they have been prevented from excelling. These
students fear deportation and are strangers in
their own land. Everything has gone against them,
but somehow, they are determined to continue
achieving. The book also points out the problems of
the current immigration system and some pragmatic
resolutions. These sixteen students represent the
millions of undocumented students across this
country. Although, their stories are different, others
can relate to them.

Why is this source important?

This source is important because it can support my

topic. One, the book recounts personal stories from
actual undocumented students and their education.
Furthermore, the book was written by a professor of
education who conducted significant research.
Although the accounts of the sixteen students are all
different, they represent the millions of
undocumented students as a whole. Education is a
central part of my topic. This can only be the best.

How will you use this source in your project? I will use this source in my topic by citing certain
sections or personal accounts of some of these
students. I will include whatever I find to be
noteworthy or exceptional. I already have written a
ten page research paper and have cited several books
which I had to read.

Summary:

This book compares the living conditions of many children

in developing Latin American countries to the United
States. Although we may see children begging on the side
of the freeway, education here, is free and compulsory.
There is a beacon of opportunity in the United States. The
book is intriguing because it states that when countries
prosper, there will be more poor people. Many of these
children must perform appalling things in order to survive
such as prostituting themselves or selling drugs or begging.
Education in Latin America is not free or compulsory. A
public school over there, is the equivalent to a private
school in the United States. Textbooks are so expensive
and everything has been privatized.

Why is this source important?

This source is important because it can show us different

perspectives. When we live in a place where there is so
much opportunity and so many wonderful services, we
forget that we have been blessed. Many children who come
to this country dream of becoming someone. They are
willing to do whatever it takes to achieve it: risking their
lives and sacrificing everything. However, Cuba has one of
the highest literacy rates in the western hemisphere and
has the largest number of physicians than any other place
in the world.

How will you use this source in your project?

When I explain what some of the motivations of these

youth to want to go to America, I will want to quote or
summarize an excerpt that I find to support my claim. I
will either directly quote it or just make a simple
reference. I want the reader of my project to be placed into
one of these childrens lives. This source is reliable because
it is a sociology report.

This article is about education and your parents

status. The article reiterates that if a parent has
illegal status, their kids are more prone to not
continue education. The article did not go into
further detail. Normally, immigrant parents insist
that their kids strive for higher education because
they can see its importance. When we live in a
society where education is possible, we seem to
take it for granted. Actually, if your parent was
undocumented and you are a citizen, it could help
your admission process.

Why is this source important?

This source is important because it deals with

education. The purpose of deferred action is to
prevent young people from being eligible to
deportation, but also to be admitted into many
universities. There are some scholarships for these
students, but they cannot receive aid because they
are not citizens or permanent residency.

How will you use this source in your project?

Hispanics have one of the highest dropout rates in

the country. Sadly, this is true. When I discuss the
demographics of education, I want to include how
dropping out is something cultural in many
families. It is different for every family. Many
immigrants wish for themselves or children, to
continue education.

Summary:

The book discusses the lives of the children of illegal

immigrants. Before the late 1970s and early 1980s,
there was no bilingual education. Now, these
children, have a dilemma: living in both worlds. The
dilemmas are learning English and becoming fully
assimilated. The problem is, what can they do? Will
their parents achieve the American Dream
vicariously through their children? The book also
confronts problems such as letting undocumented
children going to school. Also, the book considers if
the children of undocumented immigrants should be
deported with their parents or stay here, and if they
too, are considered American citizens.

Why is this source important?

This book is important because it encompasses the

lives of the children of many undocumented
immigrants. Many immigrants, at one point, were
illegal. Now, it is their children that will vicariously
carry on the American Dream if they decide. This
book entails a major issue: education. Hispanics have
the highest school drop-out rate in the country. Also,
education is key. It is education that can introduce
you into new worlds and can crush poverty.
Education and striving for a better future are the
ways in which we can change our shape our destinys
as we learn and see from others.

How will you use this source in your project? I will use this source in my project by quoting or
referencing something that I like. I want to use a part
that is about education. Education is vital to my
topic. Although, my topic is about undocumented
immigrants and remedies to their status, I want to
mention the hardships that the children of recent
immigrants face.

Summary:

This essay is about the creation of one of the worlds

most deadly gangs, MS-13 and how the gang
originated in the streets of Los Angeles. During the
1990s, states created a no gang tolerance code and
started deporting gangsters back to countries that I
had not seen since infancy. Now, with Central
American countries as corrupt as they are, gangs
have now taken over. In fact, many of the reasons
why people flee from countries like El Salvador and
Honduras are to evade gangs like these. Poverty is a
vicious cycle. Ironically, when these gangsters were
deported, they eventually returned to the United
States and stronger.

Why is this source important?

This source is extremely important because it

explains in detail the reason why there is such an
influx of Central American emigrants. Besides there
being tremendous poverty in these countries, many
people are terrified. They do not want their children
to be recruited into gangs. These gangs traffic drugs
and they kill indiscriminately. They decapitate their
victims with machetes or will open fire on school
buses.

How will you use this source in your project? I will incorporate this source into my project when I
mention socio-economic factors on people emigrating
from their home countries and coming to the United
States. I want to explain how many of these youth

The preliminary findings explain all of the benefits

of those who received DACA (deferred action) which
would enable them for two years to prevent them
from being deported and continue higher education.
They would also get a social security number to use
for a work permit. They are the future tax base of
this country. Also, people who receive deferred action
must reapply every two years. The way deferred
action is run is like a business. It is very lucrative to
the government. If one of these people commit a
felony or class a misdemeanor, they can lose their
temporary status and be deported.

Why is this source important?

This source is important because it is from the

immigration policy center. The findings were also
written by graduate university students. This
information is quite reliable and resourceful. My
topic mentions the importance of deferred action and
education.

How will you use this source in your project? I will use this source when I first explain what
deferred action is. I will use this at the beginning and
point out all of the benefits. There are a lot of facts

Summary:

This article is about how Deferred Action came to be. The

president knew that deferred action would be a popular
move to be reelected. The president stated This is not
amnesty nor immunity. While the President was rallying
for his campaign, he received a lot of criticism from civic
groups for having the highest deportation record than any
other president in history. Also, many of these
organizations were terrified of what would happen if
Mitt Romney won when he stated that he would veto the
Dream Act. Deferred action is only something that can
prevent people from being deported. The article gives little
explanation of deferred action, but instead lauds the
president. It is the best when there are no other options.

Why is this source important?

This source is important because it dates from when the

president issued his deferred action executive order. This
source gives some of the reasons why deferred action came
to be and how. If anything, it is a political article. The
article does not go into detail about deferred action, but
about the political reasoning. That there must have been
executive action because of a congressional gridlock
although in reality, that is the presidents fault.

How will you use this source in your project?

I am unsure if I will use this source in my project. If I do, I

will use when I explain the origins of DACA (deferred
action). I will want to quote an excerpt from the text to
support any of my claims. The Huffington Post can be
considered a reliable source.

Summary:

This book explains how the demographics of the United

States have changed in the recent century. For instance,
Texas, the second most populous state in the country, will
be pre-dominantly Hispanic in a few years. Schools have
now been changed. Now, there is bilingual education and
tests and services are provided in Spanish such as
standardized tests, GEDS, and screenings. By the time the
student makes it to high school, they are supposed to be
fluent in English. There has been mixed results over
mastering English and a lot of criticism over being well
balanced with Spanish and English. However, the system is
very helpful. It has made it possible for these students to
continue their education.

Why is this source important?

This source is important because it explains the everchanging education system in this society. The purpose of
bilingual education was for students who mainly here
another language at home, to be taught the same way as
their other schoolmates, but in the language that they are
more familiar with. They would learn in their native
tongue while learning English. Otherwise, these students
would be overwhelmed and could never learn anything: in
English or their native tongue (Spanish).

How will you use this source in your project?

I will definitely use this source in my project because it

covers education. Many of these immigrant students, are
products of bilingual education. I want to point out some
of the results of bilingual education and personal
experiences of students. I will reference the information by
quoting or giving an example.

Summary:

This book explains the United States Supreme Court

Case that came from Texas: Plyler v. Doe. This case
began in Texas in the early 1980s in which they found
a law that prohibited illegal immigrants to admission
and bilingual education to be unconstitutional. After
the Supreme Court overturned it, Texas started to
admit undocumented immigrant children to public
schools and allow them to have classes in their native
language. Imagine that less than thirty years ago, a
massive population could not go to school. The book
then explains the creation of the DREAM Act by
Senator Durbin and how it has never passed on a
national level. However, some states, not Texas, have
created their own version.

Why is this source important?

This source is important because it explains the

evolution of education for undocumented youth in
this country. This is major. The story is historically
very accurate and explains how this all began. This is
an incredibly important source because this goes into
detail of how it all began. Education is vital.

How will you use this source in your project? I will use this source in my project by summarizing
some of the information regarding the outcome of the
Supreme Court case that changed everything and
made all of this possible. I will incorporate some of
the facts when I explain the origins of this problem.
After all, we must know how these problems were
confronted and answered.

This book discusses the dilemma that undocumented

students have. Many of them cannot continue further
education. They cannot receive federal student aid or
loans. They have no FAFSA. Many of these students
have been here for most of their lives. Many of them
have great potential and strive to succeed. Many
times, these students have to provide for their
families and at times, come from a culture that places
servitude before yourself. The book goes into some
cultural and legal aspects. The book points out how
these students could be accommodated.

Why is this source important?

This source is important because it deals with the

problems of education and undocumented students.
Education is very important to my topic. It confronts
obstacles and gives concrete examples of overcoming
them. This is an essential source. The book also
references many legal aspects.

How will you use this source in your project? I will use this source in my project by referencing it

these students. To some of these people, they
education is not of great importance due to their

Summary:

The article explains how the influx of illegal Central

American children has increased the school
population. The article was not very descriptive or
helpful. It did state, however, that many of these kids
would be placed in intensive English classes and
remedial courses. Many of them may not even have a
foundation in Spanish.

Why is this source important?

This source is important because it covers education.

My topic is about deferred action and education.
These small kids could not be eligible for deferred
action until they are teenagers. However, education is
vital. This might create more xenophobic sentiment
since people do not want to think of their tax payer
money being used for this.

How will you use this source in your project? In all honesty, I do not know how I will use this
article in my project. It is not descriptive enough. I
probably will not use it and by the time I am writing
