Lesson Plan:
Introduction (Anticipatory Set/Motivation):
1. Get right to it and excitedly tell the students that they will be using
instruments today from the percussion family.
Process:
1. Start out by explaining the two different notes that will be used in
the lesson (quarter and two-eighths notes).
2. Use different clapping rhythms to assist in showing how the quarter
and two-eighths notes sound and that they are worth the same amount
of time, but one is two claps-per beat and the other is just one.
3. Pass out the various percussion instruments, an index card and a
pencil for each student.
4. Have the students play out several rhythms along with you, and then
repeat after you.
5. Write out on the board each rhythm that was played and point to
each beat as you play along with it.
6. After repeating the rhythms a few times ask the students to find a
spot in the room and take their instrument, card and pencil to their
spot.
7. Have the students write their names on their index cards and come
up with 3 different rhythms using only 4 beats (4 notes).
8. After an allotted time, have the students return to their seats.
9. Go down each row and have the students pick one rhythm to play and
ask them to tell which notes they used.
Accommodations:
1. This is an activity that all students can participate in. If a student is unable
to use an instrument for whatever reason, they may speak the rhythm, tap it
with their feet, or be placed with a partner for further assistance.
