Standard #4-Content Knowledge

I chose the Comprehensive Reflection paper to demonstrate how to effectively use central concepts, tools
of inquiry, and structures of the discipline to create learning experiences that make these aspects of the
discipline accessible and meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content. Students were learning
various representations of literature so I created a story that demonstrates various genres of literature by putting
it in a poetic form. It was like a walk through the central concept of literature. The paper creates opportunity for
students to learn, practice, and master academic language in their content area. The paper gives vivid details of
each genre in a way in which students can build on conceptual understanding. I used vocabulary and academic
language that was clear, concise, and appropriate for learners. Literature should be an important part of the
classroom reading program. As students analyze various types of literature, it promotes cognitive development.
When teachers are choosing good books to read, there are some questions that should be answered. Does the
story have a theme? Is the story appropriate for the intended age range? Childrens literature should consist of
various genres that offer depth of content, varying perspectives, current information, personal voice, rich
language, varied reading levels, engaging writing styles, and interesting structures and formats.
