Lesson Title:
Using Paint Program To Illustrate Sentences
Lesson Overview
Write a brief, yet concise, description of what occurs in this lesson (50 words).
What will students learn during the lesson?
In this lesson, students will learn how to use Microsoft Art and transfer their literary
thoughts into typed, technological based art and expression. If printing is available,
students may also learn how to save and print.
Common Core/State Go to the state standards website: http://www.tn.gov/education/standards/index.shtml

in this lesson. Copy and paste here:
Prior Knowledge
What prior knowledge will the students have to have to be able to do this lesson? You
might look at the year before Common Core/State Standards to see what they were
suppose to learn before doing the state standard you chose.
Kindergarten:
1.1 Students will demonstrate an understanding of the nature and
operation of technological systems.

Need or Purpose
Teachers should schedule computer lab time for this activity as well as double check that
all computers are equipped with Microsoft Art. If printing is an option, printer-computer
connection should be checked and/or tested.
Explain what the students do in this lesson that puts them in an active learning situation.
Active
Participation
The students are independently forming sentences and thinking about how to convert them into
images and typed sentences.
Formative
Assessment
The criteria should directly align with the instructional objectives and standards. How will
you monitor student progress? Also describe your plan for providing feedback to your
students during the lesson?
Student progress will be monitored based on time needed to complete the assignment and
amount of detail included within their created images. Regarding feedback during the lesson, I
would check in on each student and push them to explore the different tools provided in the
Paint program.
Materials
List all materials and include how each will be used during the lesson. Must align with the
Instructional Objective
-Overhead Projector
-Microsoft Paint
-Computers
Instructional Procedures
Essential Question An Essential Question encourages students to put forth more effort when faced with
complex, open-ended, challenging, meaningful and authentic questions.
How can a computer be used to make our sentences and pictures more exciting?
Lesson set
Motivator/Hook - How will you open the lesson to motivate the students? How will you
relate this lesson to previous learning & to real life experiences, to explain the
importance of the learning to the students? (student involvement required)
My hook for this activity would be to tell the students that after completing this assignment,
their pictures may be turned into a class book. If resources are available, each student may
receive a copy. This may encourage the students to understand that their creations are
important and have long or short term goals.
List the instructional procedures step-by-step, in sequential order as they occur in the
Techniques &
lesson. What will you do? What will the students do? How will you keep learners
Activities
1. All students will turn on their computers and access the Paint program, found on the
desktop. If located in the Start menu, I will provide assistance and direction.
2. Students will open the paint program and type their pre-written sentences as I do the
same on the projector screen.
3. From this point, students will have open exploration to discover the different tools on
Paint in order to illustrate their pictures. In order to maintain interest, I will
simultaneously illustrate my own image and provide brief tutorials on different tools.
Extension
How will I provide modified instructions for gifted students? I call this Gear-up.
Extensions are additional activities to expand the learning on the lesson. If students
finish early what will the supplemental activity be? - I will have them do.
There are many tools available on the Paint program. If a student finishes
their assignment early, I would encourage them to open a new page and
experiment with the tools they did not use, or, use those tools to enhance
their already made image.
Remediation
How will I provide modified instructions for below average? I call this - gear-down.
Remediation activities include methods to re-teach the learning for students who need
more instruction. If a student falls behind I will ..
How will I provide modified instruction for special education? How will you adapt the
learning for learners with special needs? Choose one disability and tell me how you
would adapt this lesson for that disability.
Down syndrome
In this situation, I would use an alternative form of technology (example: iPad rather than
Computer) for the student to access Paint on. By doing this, fewer fine motor skills are exerted
by the student in the form of using their fingers and tapping the screen rather than clicking,
grabbing and moving a mouse.
CLOSURE
Reflection / Wrap-Up. How will you close the lesson, summarize the lesson content,
relate the lesson to future lessons & tie it to previous lessons? (student-involvement
required). How will I review subject-matter and purpose with students?
After the students have completed the paint program assignment, I will take all of their printed
pages and compile them into a class book. The book may be referenced during future
assignments pertaining to the class as a whole, or facts about specific individuals. If the
materials are available, each student may have a copy of the class book.
Summative
Assessment
Describe the assessment process that you will use to measure whether the students
achieved the instructional objectives. How will you assess the student
performance/mastery of skill? What are the criteria for achievement, and performance
level? How will you assess that students have learned? How will you monitor student
progress? The criteria should directly align to the instructional objectives and standards.
Also describe your plan for providing feedback to your students.
Student progress will be measured on an individual basis. Based on the amount of detail in each
students assignment, I will have an idea of their mastery of different tools within the Paint
program. During the lesson, if students struggle with certain tools, I can use a projector to
provide demonstrations. If a student struggles with the typing portion of the assignment, I will
help as needed. By providing an opportunity for typing practice alongside utilizing creativity,
students may display a quicker or more positive attitude towards achieving standard goals.
