Name

of the activity: What do you Want to be When you Grow Up?

Duration: 45 Minutes

Activity Description: I will introduce the lesson I have created during the morning
circle time. I will begin by asking children What do you want to be when you grow
up?

I will then introduce that in our community there are multiple jobs that people do.
To connect the discussion I will introduce a story by the tittle This is my town? By
Mercer Mayer. At the end of the reading I will ask the children if based on the
reading they see anything that they would want to be when they grow up.
Then, I will introduce a matching game, I will begin by showing different pictures of
community helpers and ask children to name the person and the job they do. The
children can then match up corresponding objects (picked out from box) to the of
the community helper.
I will encourage the children to name the jobs of their parents and talk about how
the jobs help others.
To wrap up our lesson, I will introduce the children to a song to the tune
Happy Birthday to you.
Good morning to you! And how do you do? We are the community people, in your
neighborhood. As I present all the different community helpers laid of the rug.

Learning Goal: To give children an understanding of the different occupations that
exist in the community and the job that they do and to give them an idea of what
type of grown up that they would want to be when they grow up.
Objectives:
1. For children to be able to identify occupations that exist in in the story and
create an idea of what they want to do when they grow up.
2. Find pictures of objects that correspond with different community helpers

Materials:
Book This is my town By Mercer Mayer
Laminated objects and occupations

Extension:
Introduce different career outfits in dramatic play area for the children to dramatize
those professions with guidance.
Bring in a variety of occupation puppets for children to make a play and sing song
with the tune Happy birthday to you.
Investigate what jobs neighbors in their own community do.

Adaptations-
Translate into Spanish and English for all the children.
Have the child who needs glasses sit closer to the book (in case glasses are not
worn)
Ask for help from teachers to help and sit close to children that are very busy.

How will I document the learning?
I plan on documenting the learning by asking the teachers in the classroom to
photograph the lesson, use my teachers recordings, and put together a board with
an explanation of the lesson plan, the children dialogues from the observations and
pictures during the lesson.
