Kolb EDUC 461 Fall 2014

Journal Entry for August 21, 2014

The second day ran a little more like the first day. The agenda for me was to test the
students with a pre-assessment that my teacher had laid out for them. The pre-assessment
consisted of naming uppercase and lowercase letters, identifying numbers 1-20, writing their first
and last name, identifying shapes, and knowing their colors. Since I was the one that
administered the assessment, I had a knowledge of where the students were academic wise. This
assessment will help me with my contextual factors and where the students will be placed as far
as grouping patterns. My teacher also wants me to help with the intervention and what the
students need to work on as far as skills. I have been doing research on intervention skills for the
students that need it.
There are a few students that will need extra help outside of the classroom. Two students
have been asked by the parents to continue speech therapy and one student has been getting extra
help with one of the special education coordinators at the school. I learned that it was one of the
repeaters from last year who did work with. He has improved so much better that it is a good
idea that he gets extra help so he can be fully prepared for first grade. The other repeater that will
continue speech therapy did not do so well on his pre-assessment because we think that no one
continue to work with him on those skills.
During the day, we went over procedures, introductions, and routines of how to come in
the morning, the lunch room, and how we leave the room at dismissal. My teacher did calendar
which is something each of the K-5 teachers do every morning. She did a lot physical activity for
the students to get up and move. For ELA she read the big book of Franklin Goes to School and
for the activity the students were each called to Ms. Bolden to paint the outside of a small bowl
green. They were making mini Franklin turtles. She did a math lesson and introduce the students
to recognizing their numbers. During this whole time, I was testing students so I did not see
much of the lessons that she did. I did not get to see much until after lunch.
My teacher did put them in centers but went over the rules of each the centers. The only
centers she did not use was the science and math manipulatives center. Since the temperature
outside was too hot for the students, we did not go outside for recess but just decided to do

centers instead. The rest of the day was playing in centers until we went home. This was the first
day that I got to do car duty which was very hectic. We had to get the line moving of the cars and
get the students home.
After the students went home, my teacher and I came into the room to get things ready
for tomorrow and went over the lesson plan for that day. She said that it is important to get things
ready for the next days so you are prepared. I took that in consideration cause during my 429
experience I did not do that for the last part of my last lesson and it went hectic so I definitely
need to have my materials for my students.
