Kolb EDUC 461 Fall 2014

Journal Entry for August 27, 2014

In ELA, the students learned how to write the letter C and their upper and lowercase form
as well. We did more of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and since we did do that, the students
were able to memorize the lines of the book which is an element of shared reading. I like the idea
of using one book for the whole week and base that around your lessons and you can integrate all
subjects depending on the book. For the predictable charts, we did the same thing by having the
students come up and read their sentences. The reasoning behind that was because Friday the
students will have the put their sentence back in order.
In Math, we worked more on the tens frame but gave the students blank tens frame. My
teacher would write a numeral on the whiteboard and the students would have to show how
many using the tens frame and unifex cubes. I sat at the low group table and I was surprised of
how many knew the amount to put on the tens frame. I worked with one student in particular. He
would not look at the number so I would ask him how many cubes do you need to put on your
tens frame. He would shout a number that was not even close like 12. What I want to really work
on with him is count each dot carefully instead of rushing or saying a number that is not right at
all.
Today I retested the students from the pre-assessments but did it on the letters, numbers,
shapes, and colors that they did get wrong. Some definitely did improve and some did not. It also
showed me what students needed to progress as they go. I found a neat idea for the students for
RTI/Intervention time by doing a match game of the letters or you can use numbers too. Ms.
South liked the idea but she had some things already that were similar to my idea but already
made so that way we did have to buy anything. This was also the day that I tried to comfort one
of my students that morning because she was crying on the bus. This incident also caused two K4 students to cry so in my head I am thinking Oh no! What do I do now! The way I approached
it was get the childs mind off of what they are crying about which I did but it only worked for
about five minutes.
