The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination administered and conducted in eight zones
across the country by the GATE Committee comprising faculty from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and seven Indian
Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human
Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.
Admission to post graduate programmes at engineering and other professional colleges in the country such as IISc Bangalore,
IITs, NITs and other colleges are open to those who qualify through GATE. GATE qualified candidates in Engineering disciplines
are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories. Some government organizations prescribe
GATE qualification as a requirement for applying to the post of a Scientist/Engineer.
GATE is held on the second Sunday of every February in 21 disciplines, of which Electronics and Communication engineering
(EC) and Computer Science (CS) form the largest chunk.
The GATE pattern has undergone significant changes over the last few years and the GATE’09 announcement threw up another
surprise. Instead of the usual 85 questions totaling 150 marks, GATE’09 had only 60 questions totaling 100 marks (visit
www.gateforum.com to see the complete pattern details). Another significant change has been in the penalty for a wrong
answer - up from 1/4th in GATE’08 to 1/3rd in GATE’09. Also, the validity of the GATE score has been reduced from two years to
one year. This means that an aspirant has to take up GATE again if he/she wishes to apply the next year.
Though there was a drop in the difficulty level of the questions asked across all streams, the questions had gotten trickier. A
complete understanding of the concepts was required of the candidate in order to succeed. And since the penalty for a wrong
answer was higher, it made the question paper riskier than the earlier ones. We believe that this paper was designed so as so
clearly segregate the good students from the others (For a complete analysis of the GATE’09 paper, visit www.gateforum.com).
Increase in Competition
Although the number of aspirants had been steadily increasing since 2001, GATE’09 saw a significant jump with more than 2
lakh students appearing. ECE and Computer Science had more than forty thousand aspirants while the electrical and
mechanical papers saw more than twenty thousand test takers. This increase in the number can be attributed to the current
economic recession which has made jobs scarce and has increased the attractiveness of an M.Tech degree.
This is the first time that the marks scored by a candidate have also been displayed. All the ambiguity surrounding the exam
has vanished and we can analyze the results objectively.
The table below shows the marks required for a corresponding range of ranks.
AIR Range
The above table clearly shows that the IN paper, along with the EE paper, was the toughest and the ECE paper was the easiest.
The extreme toughness of the IN paper makes a strong case for an instrumentation engineer to appear in the ECE discipline as
the chances of qualifying the exam are better. Also, we can see that the qualifying marks are nearly the same in all the papers.
This years results have also shown that despite the papers being slightly easier, the deceptiveness incorporated in the papers
coupled with the increase in penalty and the increase in number of test takers have intensified competition in the AIR >200
range.
Once the initial hurdle (GATE) is cleared, an aspirant is faced with another – that of the admission process of various colleges.
Each department of each college has a different selection procedure which often creates confusion and indecisiveness in the
mind of the aspirant. For example, the ME program at the IISc has direct admission whereas the M.Tech program has a written
test followed by an interview and the MS program has only an interview. Hence a candidate has to prepare for all processes
thoroughly. Also, one has to apply to each department separately since there is no common counseling procedure. Hence each
candidate has to judiciously select departments where he has the best chance of getting admission, given his GATE rank. A
rank of below 100 would pose no problems as it would guarantee a seat in either the IISc or IIT Mumbai, but if you have
secured a rank above 100, the options get confusing, especially while choosing the combination of institute and specialization
and also in cases of inter disciplinary admissions. This is where a student will do well to take expert guidance. (Please visit
www.gateforum.com for a comprehensive post GATE admission guide)
Academic programs leading to M.E. or M.Tech by course work and Ph.D. and M.Sc.(Engg.) by research are available in almost
all the departments. Excellent laboratory and computational facilities, an unique library, outstanding faculty with strong
interests in both basic and applied sciences, make 'dream come true' kind of environment to students with strong interest and
aptitude for research. These programs attract students from all corners of the country, in addition to some international
students.
IISc offers ME/MTECH/MS/MSc/PHD in 18 departments/centers. The major research areas of Computer Science, Electrical
Engineering, Electrical Communication Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering are as follows:
Electrical Communication Engineering: - The department has four major specialization areas.

Mechanical Engineering: -Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing, Rapid Prototyping, Robotics and Controls,
Turbomachinery and Combustion Systems, IC Engines, Multi-Phase flow, Nano-mechanics, Tribology, Computational Fluid
Dynamics and Acoustics.
Admission Procedure: - The process is different for all the four programs (ME/MTECH/MS/MSc) offered by IISC.
ME: - The admission is purely based on Gate Performance (AIR/Score). There is no test and interview. Rank below 50(AIR 50)
can almost guarantee a seat in ME Course.
MTECH: - Admission to this program is based on the performance in test and interview conducted by respective department.
Center of Electronic Design and Technology (CEDT) and Computational Science department offer MTech Course. A rank of 400-
500 in EC/CS/EE can be said safe range for getting the call for CEDT Course whereas rank in the range of 80-90 is considered
to be safe for getting call from Computational Science department.
MS/MSc: - These are research-orientated programs and admission to these programs is also based on test/interview. Rank as
high as 700-800 could end up in giving an interview call for these programs.
IISC also conducts its own entrance test and good performance (Score/rank) in this test will also be helpful in getting the
interview calls if Gate Score is not sufficient enough for applying.

Admission Procedure: - The institute has provision for direct admission (based on rank/score) as well as admission based on
the performance in test/interview conducted by the respective department. Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering
Department follow the above procedure, but Electrical Engineering Department does not offer any direct seat. The details of
procedure for every department is as follow
Computer Science: Normally, half of total seats are filled up by direct admission i.e. based on Gate performance and for the
remaining seats test and interview is conducted.
There are no hard and fast rules for total number of student taken each year. The interview panel can take as many students as
possible depending upon their performance in interview. Final merit list is made based on the performance in test, interview
and Gate Score. As per the opinion of previous year students higher the rank in test is, better is the chance of making in the
final merit list. Gate Score hardly makes any difference.
Electrical Engineering: The department offers four different courses. The department does not conduct any test for the
admission to MTech course. Admission is purely based on the interview. The students who got interview call are asked to fill up
one application form once they reach and they have to choose one course/specialization out of four. Finally there are four
separate groups and interview is conducted separately for each group or specialization. Final merit list is made based on the
performance in interview and Gate.
Mechanical Engineering: - MTech seats are offered direct and based on test/interview, similar to Computer Science department. One common
interview is conducted for all the specialization falling under Mechanical Engineering and final merit list is based on the performance in interview
and Gate Score. Once Again it is the performance of student in interview, which plays a major role for selection.
For details of admission procedure, cut-off and eligibility for different courses offers at IIT Kanpur, refer IIT Kanpur table.
